Fax consol can't receive

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have tried 2 different computers and 2 differnt fax modems to set up to

receive a fax. Have it set on manual and when phone rings I hit answer

button. I get box saying I am receiving fax from another phone number.

After about 50 sec, I get "An error occured receiving a fax from xxx-xxxx"

I have reinstalled fax services and still can't receive.

Running Windows Firewall and AVG 8.0

Any suggestions on what is going on?

I have a phone connected into the phone jack on hte internal modem that

works fine.

This is driving me nuts Need Help

Thanks

RE: Fax consol can't receive

I am using a dsl modem and didn't have a dsl filter on the line going to the

modem. Do you think that could be the culprit?

Thanks for any responses.

RE: Fax consol can't receive

Using a dsl filter didn't work.

Some more info, I get to the 50sec mark after the modem answers the phone.

Then I get "An error occured when receiving a fax."

Maybe this info will help.

1. Has this ever worked?

2. Try disconnecting your DSL modem from the wall jack and connecting

the fax modem directly to the wall jack, without any filter.

3. Assuming that (2) does not work, is either of the fax modems you

tried on the Windows XP HCL list?

http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Default.aspx?m=x [use IE *ONLY* for

this page]

4. Can you *send* a fax? Even if you don't have a fax machine handy to

use as a test receiver, just try to send a fax to your cell phone. If

the phone rings and when you answer you hear "fax tones", that's a

pretty good indication that it will work when sending to a real fax machine.

In general, http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm (somewhat old,

but still a very good source of advice. see particularly, #12)

Re: Fax consol can't receive

Yes it has worked before. I only get faxes during Football season and since

last year I have moved from cable to dsl modem.

My dsl also has my digital tv through it. THe tech ran cat 5 cable to the

sites where I have tv and internet. The cat 5 adapts to phone line to the

modem and then cat 5 to the tv box. My modem has 4 ports and port 1 is for

internet and 2, 3 and 4 is for tv. I have the fax modem plugged into an

existing rj11 jack that was here before the dsl was installed.

My fax modem came with the AS Rock MB and is a HSP56 M (VIA). Lots of VIA on

HCL list. It did work before.

I sent a fax to my cell and when I answered it I got a high pitched beeep

for about 1 sec then again. I assumed that is what I was to hear.

Hope this helps.

THanks Lem for the assistance.

Re: Fax consol can't receive

I'm sorry, I don't have any solution for you.

Are you certain that the incoming calls that drop after about a minute

are really faxes? The behavior you describe (faxmodem can make outgoing

fax calls; answers an incoming call but drops it after about a minute)

is exactly what I experience when telemarketers call on my fax line.

Once the modem "answers" an incoming call, if it doesn't detect fax

tones, it takes it about a minute or so to decide that there's something

wrong and give the error message, even if the caller has hung up earlier.

Try re-posting your question in the windowsxp.print_fax newsgroup:

http://news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax

Microsoft's clunky web interface: http://tinyurl.com/3t5a2w

There are two very knowledgeable people (Russ Valentine and Hal

Hostetler) who often respond to fax-related posts in that group.

Perhaps they can help you.

Include in your post at least:

1. The description of what happens when you try to receive a fax.

2. What version/service pack of XP you're using

3. Your fax modem make/model

4. The fact that you were able to send *and* receive faxes when you were

connected to the Internet using a cable modem, but that you have now

changed to DSL

5. A description of how your modem is connected to your DSL line (or to

a separate phone line, if that's the case).

6. Your note about the phone connected to the phone jack of the faxmodem.

7. That you were able to send a "fax" to your cell phone and the tones

you heard.

Did you connect the DSL filter onto the phone jack that the standard

analog fax / fax modems use to dial out from? DSL filters are only to

be used on every phone jack that you connect a standard "home" phone

or fax. DSL "signals" use higher frequencies and might use the other

wires than the regular voice signals. Do not install one on the phone

jack that the DSL modem use.

Re: Fax consol can't receive

I have the fax modem going directly to a rj11 wall jack that was there before

dsl was installed. Talked to my isp and they recommended unplugging dsl

modemand try, no luck. I have print screens of the event viewer and the

configure fax final screen that shows the settings but can't see how to post

the "doc" file.

When I configure the fax consol, I just put my first name in as name and the

TSID as fax and set CSID as fax and have a folder to save faxes. I can't

think of why I get the error when receiving.

Thanks for the assistance
