Wins server install ??

Recommended Posts

I have a small network of about 15 computers. One AD. 2003 server. The

dhcp is done by the router, if that matters. The server is set up to

do dns.

I have installed the wins role to help in network conectivity.

Once its installed, which seems like a prety simple process. Is there

anything else I need to do. Is it like DNS where you basically install

it and your done. I have looked at it and it seems to be showing the

servers ip address but when i look at Active Registrations and

Replication partners I dont see anything listed.

Is it working ??

Will it only work if I put the wins server name in each one of the

computer network settings??

Thanks.

Yes it matters,...it is not a Active Directory aware DHCP service

It has to be in the machines TCP/IP settings,..if not the machine will

neither use WINS nor will it register itself in WINS.

Disable DHCP on the Router. Install it on the Server, setup the Scope,

setup the Server Options, authorize it, activate it.

Hello Steve,

Do you have more sites in your environment? If not WINS is not needed, DNS

will be enough, just make sure all clients have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled

on the NIC properties. I would also let the server do DHCP, then you are

more flexibel and can also update DNS records. Prevents also multiple entries

in DNS with the same ip for different machines.

See here:

If you still will use it, see here:

That will make for a much "chattier" network. If people want to browse, they

need NetBT - and if they need that, I always install/configure WINS, even

these days.
