Folders views keep changing

Folders do not keep the viewing options we'd like. They keep resetting to

"Detailed" and keep resetting the size of the window to 3/4 the page

rectangular. So say for instance, we have one folder on our desktop that has

5 files in it. When it comes up I'd like for it to view "Icons" and to be a

long rectangular box at the bottom of my monitor screen. It used to do this,

but now it views as "Detailed" and a bigger window in the middle of my

monitor. I can reset it and it will keep that setting (mostly) until we

reboot (which every night we turn off the computer).

I think I remember a long time ago having this problem on our other computer

and someone in this forum game me some change to the registry, but I can't

find that anywhere.

Thanks,

~Diane

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party

applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These include

but are not limited to Ad-aware Pro Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,

SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, AVG Anti-Spyware,

Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, NOD32, and Zone Alarm

(Free, Pro, & Security Suite).

We only have Panda, and have had it for quiet some time before this started

happening. Is there another option as to why?

No, I did not miss it.

My point was that we've had panda for ever and this problem only started

recently. So I do not see that panda could be the problem. I could see if

we had just recently downloaded it and then started having the problem, but

you have given me no explanation as to why this is happening all of sudden

after we have had it for years.

What I stated at first was that this happened on the other computer we have

and someone in this forum gave me a fix for it that changed a value in the

registry.

Do you, or anyone else out there, know this fix?

Re: Folders views keep changing

Folder views are stored in "Bags" and the number of available bags

is controlled by a Registry Key called BagMRU size. What may

have triggered the loss of views is the maximum number was reached

and the values rolled over. It's generally recommended to set the

BagMRU size value to 5000 or greater ( Decimal, not Hexadecimal ).

In some cases it's necessary to increase the retention count and also

remove existing bags and have to reset particular folder views to a

preferred size & location.

RE: Folders views keep changing

Try these:

Open an instance of Windows Explorer. Set it the way you like it: size,

position, file views, etc..Now close the window by holding down the Ctrl key

and mouse left clicking the close button on the top right of the windows (red

X). Windows should remember the settings the next tiome Windows Explorer is

opened.

Re: Folders views keep changing

The question remains: How did that Registry value get changed in the first

place? Chances are it was done by one or more of your security

applications.

Re: Folders views keep changing

I am just letting you know about a VBScript to manage folder views:

Folder View Master by MS-MVP Kieth Miller (no homepage anymore)

http://mysite.verizon.net/res18hr7/FVM3.zip or

http://members.home.nl/alsdewiedeweerga/Scripts/FVM3/FVM3.rar

Just follow its directions. If you want to master folder views too, just ask.

Thank you. This fixed my problem.

Re: Folders views keep changing

The value was *not* changed. It was 5000 (hex 1388). Changing the value to

8000 fixed my problem. I have a TON of folders on this computer for

pictures and videos. I had exceeded the value.

My security application was not the problem.

It might be more helpful, PA Bear, if you would listen more to what the

person is explaining is the problem, rather than just what you think is the

problem and being argumentative and rude (ie "Did you miss the "these include

but are not limited to" part?").

Re: Folders views keep changing

My XP has been running for years. I use a lot of specific folder

views. Currently my Bags count is ~4390, so I'd vote that you

take that value on up to 8000.
