Windows XP Users login error

Recommended Posts

I had a Home PC with XP prof on it, I had installed an additional harddisk

with XP OS on it to this PC. After the installation, I tried to boot up my

original harddisk withe the XP OS, when I start it up, it gets to the login

screen correctly and I can log in with no issues.

The problem comes in where after I log in, the desktop background image

loads up, but none of the desktop icons, start bar or system tray. If I Ctrl

+ Alt + Del and go to Task Manager, I can run any program without any issues.

I tried to login to all others users account, all having the same problems.

How to solve this problems.

Thanks

Hi,

This generally has to do with Display Drivers. Try a roll back via the

Device Manager.

In the meantime, see if line 164 helps:

Re: Windows XP Users login error

Hi, not work!.

When I go into "regedit" I found out that my orginal harddisk is label F:\

drive but in the reg file it all refer to C:\. So how do I change all the C:\

in the reg. file to F:\?

It was because when I removed one of the harddisk and booting from the

orginal harddisk, it will stop running just before the welcom screen. But if

I put it back the 2nd harddisk and booting up together it will at least get

into the users login stage.

Re: Windows XP Users login error

Can you actually log on in one configuration or the other? If so then do

this:

- Click Start / Run / cmd {OK}

- Type the following commands:

cd > %SystemRoot%\test.txt{Enter}

mountvol >> %SystemRoot%\test.txt{Enter}

set >> %SystemRoot%\test.txt{Enter}

notepad %SystemRoot%\test.txt{Enter}

- Paste the screen details into your reply.

I'm confused. Please explain how exactly you generated the two lots of

information you posted, i.e. which disk(s) were connected and which one was

the primary master.

Re: Windows XP Users login error

I have two harddisk installed in my PCs, both the harddisk I had installed

the XP prof on it. Harddisk A is a 80MB disk and harddisk B is a 500MB disk.

Both are SATA disk

The 1st set of the info (point A) , is the harddisk (80MB) that given me the

problem. I boot it up (use it as a primary master disk with the 2nd harddisk

(500MB) as secondary disk) and at the welcome screen and I login into my

account (user name mak), but it only load the desktop background image but

none of the desktop icons, start bar or system tray.

I have to use the Ctrl-Alt-Del to get into the task manager. From the task

manager I select File/run and follow the instruction that get the info.

This harddisk (80MB) window define as F:\ but you can see that in the

registry files some show C:\ and some show F:\. there I not able login into

the system.

The 2nd set of the info (point B), is the harddisk that working fine. This

round I boot up from the 500MB disk as a primary master disk (window define

as C:\) and the 80MB disk as a secondary disk. In this case I am able to

access the system without any problem. I follow your instruction goto

star/run and get the 2nd set of the info.

Re: Windows XP Users login error

OK, things are getting a little clearer. Three more questions before I will

suggest a course of action:

1. What happens when you boot the machine with your 80 GByte disk only, i.e.

with the 500 GByte disk disconnected. Does it boot into a desktop (blank or

populated)? What is the System drive letter, C: or F:?

2. What happens when you boot the machine with your 500 GByte disk only,

i.e. with the 80 GByte disk disconnected. Does it boot into a desktop (blank

or populated)? What is the System drive letter, C: or F:?

2. I assume your normal operation used (past tense!) the 80 GByte disk as

your primary master disk. What was its System drive letter before this

problem started, C: or F:?

Re: Windows XP Users login error

1) When I disconnected the 500GB disk and only booting up with the 80GB

disk, it will stop at the window startup screen (with blue desktop background

and the words Microsoft Windows XP and the logo). From here I can't go

anywhere, Ctrl-Alt-Del not working, can't go into task manager. I have to

switch off the PC power, otherwise I can't get out. I can't check the system

drive letter.

2) When I disconnected the 80GB disk and only booting up with the 500GB

disk, no problem at all, can login, access windows and running application

etc. I can found out that the 500GB disk system drive letter is C:

3) before I installed the 500GB disk, the 80GB disk is the only disk that is

used to run my normal operation (primary master disk). system drive letter is

C:\

4) My intention to installed the 2nd disk (500GB) with the XP on it is to

a) replace the existing 80GB and when everything OK I will remove the

80GB disk. OR

b) I will use the 500GB disk as a primary master disk, and the 80MB disk

will be secondary disk, Because I had installed a lot of things on this 80GB

disk, On and off I may need to boot up from this 80GB disk to run the

application/data etc.

Re: Windows XP Users login error

OK, here is what I suggest:

1. Connect the 80 GB disk as a slave disk.

2. Boot the machine with your 500 GB disk.

3. Copy F:\windows\system32\config\*.* to F:\RegistryBackup.

4. Check that the registry files copied in Step2 are really backed up.

5. Connect the 500 GB disk as a slave disk.

6. Boot the machine with your 80 GB disk.

7. Open the regstry and navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices.

8. Rename \DosDevices\C: to \DosDevices\X:

9. Rename \DosDevices\F: to \DosDevices\C:

10. Disconnect the 500 GByte disk.

11. Reboot the machine.

This ***should*** fix your problem. If it does not then you can restore the

original configuration by running through Steps 1 and 2 and reversing Step

3.

Re: Windows XP Users login error

I followed your instruction but not working and I follow the Setp 1, 2 and 3

- copy F:\RegistryBackup f:\windows\system32\config

and try to boot up 80GB disk as master and 500GB as Slave disk.

Now is wrose, it boot up and stop at the window screen (with blue desktop

background and the words MS windows XP and logo) I can't access anything have

to power off the pc now. Not even can go into the Task Manager now.

Now it's time to reverse the change, as suggested in my previous reply.

I had reversed the changes but the result are as I mentioned in the last email.

This sounds highly suspicious. I suspect that your reversal did not work out

as intended. Use the instructions in this link

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/peboot.htm to examine the following two registry

files while your 500 GB disk is the primary master disk:

F:\windows\system32\config\System

F:\RegistryBackup\System

You need to look at HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices. The values "DosDevices\?:

should be identical for the two hives. There must be no value

"DosDevices\X:" in either of the two files.

To ensure that you're really, really looking at a System hive on drive F:,

insert a fake DosDevices value (e.g. DosDevices\Q:), then unload that hive.

If you were looking at the correct file then your change must be reflected

in the date/time stamp of F:\windows\system32\config\System or

F:\RegistryBackup\System. Best to delete the fake value when finished.

Tks for your help but I am not technical enough to understand your email.

I believe you want me to create a BartPE bootable cd, Am I suppose to

install the PEBuilder on the C: or F: drive. also in the Builer source tab

(Path to windows installation files) am I suppose to select C: or F:? BTW I

managed create the cd based on the F: drive

Not sure what you mean "using the PEboot.htm to examine two registry files

while your 500GB (C:) disk is the primary master disk" Am I suppose to boot

the system using the BartPE bootable cd? And then

a) Type regedit, select HKEY_USERS hive, select File/load hive

b) goto f:\windows\system32\config\ select SOFTWARE/OPEN

c) type MY_FdriveHive

d) navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\Mounted\Devices

Not sure what you mean "You need to look at HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices. The

values "DosDevices\?: should be identical for the two hives. There must be no

value "DosDevices\X:" in either of the two files."

Re: Windows XP Users login error

What I did is bootup 500GB as primary Master, regedit and found out that

HKLM\SYSTEM\Mounteddevices are as follow:-

\DosDevices\C: cd cc cd cc 00 7e 00 00

\DosDevices\F: 7c f7 75 83 00 7e 00 00

\DosDevices\E: 5c 00 3f 00 3f 00 5c 00 49 00 44 00 45 00 23 00 43 ........

(Drive E: in the 500GB disk is DVD drive)

Value for HKEY_USERS\MY_FDrvHive\MountedDevices are as follows:-

\DosDevices\C: 5c 00 3f 00 3f 00 5c 00 49 00 44 00 45 00 23 00 43 ......

\DosDevices\F: 7c f7 75 83 00 7e 00 00

\DosDevices\X: cd cc cd cc 00 7e 00 00

From here not sure what to do.

The presence of "X:" demonstrates that you did not restore the system

registry from its backup location. I repeat the steps you need to take, as

stated before:

1. Connect the 80 GB disk as a slave disk.

2. Boot the machine with your 500 GB disk.

3. Copy F:\RegistryBackup\*.* F:\windows\system32\config

Re: Windows XP Users login error

I tried to restore but when I type copy F:\RegistryBackup\*.*

F:\windows\system32\config, it give the error message " The system cannot

find the path specified"

If I type "Copy F:\RegistryBackup F:\windows\system32\config then it will

appeal

" Overwrite f:\RegistryBackup?" If I enter then "1 file(s) copied"

Not sure whether I do a proper backup of the RegistryBackup bec I follow

your instruction "Copy F:\windows\system32\config\*.* to F:\RegistryBackup"

When I do the backup.

Anything can resolve?

My previous instructions, before you changed the registry, ran like this:

1. Connect the 80 GB disk as a slave disk.

2. Boot the machine with your 500 GB disk.

3. Copy F:\windows\system32\config\*.* to F:\RegistryBackup.

4. Check that the registry files copied in Step2 are really backed up.

From your report I gain the impression that in Step 3 you did not copy the

"Config" folder to the "RegistryBackup" folder and that you skipped Step 4

that required you to check the existence of the backed up registry files. In

other words, "F:\RegistryBackup" is now one single file instead of a folder

containing half a dozen registry files.

If this is correct then my fail-safe plan to have a full backup of all

registry files failed. You must now manually undo the registry change that

you previously performed. It requires the same technique as explained in the

previously quoted link at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/peboot.htm. To protect

yourself against further damage you MUST begin by backing up the existing

registry files and you MUST check that the backed up files exist. Skipping

either of these steps is likely to cause you further problems.

Alternatively, if you feel that you're getting into deep water then you

might decide that it's time to cut your losses and drop the installation on

your 80 GByte disk altogether.

Re: Windows XP Users login error

I managed to restore back the 80GB RegistryBackup, this command will not

backup all the files (Copy F:\windows\system32\config\*.* to

F:\RegistryBackupwe) unless you have to create a directory first called

RegistryBackup then the command will work and can be backup all the files.

I am going to try the following steps again. The only thing I am not sure is

step 10 - "disconnect the 500GB disk". Currently what I do is I will shutdown

the PCs, open up the box and plug out the cable (SATA Disk) then I boot up

the pcs with only the 80MB Disk.

Is this the correct way to disconnect the disk, any "command" or software

that I can use without opening the PCs and plug out the cable.

*** The phrase "Copy F:\windows\system32\config\*.* to F:\RegistryBackupwe"
