Major problem after converting from FAT 32 to NTFS -urgent help ne

Recommended Posts

Posted

I don't know if anyone can help regarding the following problem but, if you

can, I really need your help.

Because my PC used to operate with ME and was updated to XP Home, my filing

system was FAT 32. Due to the fact that NTFS is a better system, I decided

to convert from FAT 32 to NTFS using the XP built-in converter. All went

well except for one major problem...after startup and after approx. 3 to 5

minutes, a blue screen appears that reads: "a problem has been detected and

windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

BAD_POOL_HEADER" then the message goes on telling you lots more regarding

uninstalling any recent programs etc. (there has been no real recent

programs and naturally this error is caused by something to do with the

conversion).

I tried rebooting many times and the same problem keeps happening. After

approx 3-5 minutes it reverts to the same blue screen message in ALL

circumstances..i.e.. If I log on as normal or if I don't log on and don't do

anything.

If anyone can help solve this problem it would be very, very much appreciated.

Needless to say, I am able to write to you because I am using my wife's

computer.

Thank you so much for your time!

Hi Razz,

Does the same thing happen when you start Windows in Safe Mode? Boot

the computer and press F8 until you see the option dialog to start in

Safe Mode.

Terry, I have tried several times to get into the area were I can activate

safe mode but it just will not go to that screen - i.e. it continues on to

the log on page. It is not because I don't know the procedure for activating

Safe Mode, because I have in the past.

Any advice of how to proceed now? I really appreiate your time and effort!

Yes, I have SP3 and all was working perfectly until I decided to convert to

NTFS. I regret making that decision due to this problem :-(

Constantly tap F8 as soon as you see the BIOS screen (not from a

restart, but from a cold boot). Sometimes it can be hard to grab

waiting too long.

Access the PC's BIOS and check to see if the settings for "USB

keyboard" or "Legacy USB" settings are set. You might be using a USB

keyboard, which might prevent the F8 entry.

Okay. So you have 3 to 5 minutes to make a change. Let Windows boot.

Quickly click Start, Run, type msconfig and click OK. When it opens

click the BOOT.INI tab and check /SAFEBOOT and click OK.

Reboot to see if the same thing occurs.

I have always been able to get into Safe Mode in the past. It is only since

converting from FAT 32 to NTFS (last night) that I suddenly can't get into

Safe Mode :-(

I did what you said and it seems to be in safe mode because a black screen

briefly appeared saying "safe mode" in the corners and then it went to the

log in page, with the image being really big now (so I assume thats still

safe mode) .. BUT .. just this second, its back to the same blue screen -

after approx. 5-7 minutes of me not logging in. What should I do now?

Terry, thank you for your help I really appreciate all your time.

Terry, don't know if this matters, but I restarted again (still in safe

mode) and this time I logged in and again the blue screen message appears

after about 5 minutes.

I found 7 Help & Support articles about this error. None seem to apply to

you.

However, this is a driver issue. I believe that the error applies to non

paged pool which is where all drivers live.

Razz,

I don't know if it's coincidence, but you might be having another issue

that happened to come up when you converted. Have you made sure that

your CPU fan, power supply fan(s) and other case fans are all

operational and that all case openings, heat sinks are dust free? If

you can boot for a few minutes and then blue screen, quite often heat is

an issue. At least let's eliminate that to be sure.

Not necessarily a driver issue since it still happens in Safe Mode.

Are you sure about the heat? Have you gone in to your BIOS and let the

computer sit for about 5-10 minutes and monitor the temp settings?

A Repair Install may or may not cure it. If you have the original CD

you could give it a try (not a recovery CD).

You could possibly try a program that has the capability to convert NTFS

to FAT32. I know Partition Magic can do it and there might be a free

alternative (for at least long enough for you to convert it) like BootIT NG

Re: Major problem after converting from FAT 32 to NTFS -urgent hel

Can you boot to your install cd?

if so, do that and let it sit waiting for you to respond for 5-7 minutes see

if it crashes on you, if not, then I suggest your hd has gotten corrupted

files and they need to be repaired, perform a repair install.

it wouldn't make sense for anything like hardware to go bad just because you

changed the file structure, but it does happen, if it does crash on you, then

I would think your hd has gone bad, any idea of how old it is?

It's doubtful that whatever CD he has has SP3 so a repair install is out

of the question unless he slipstreams SP3.

Re: Major problem after converting from FAT 32 to NTFS -urgent hel

All problems seem to have been solved (a looong day/night trying tons of

things finally paid off) EXCEPT for one more problem that I need help to

solve. I have NO Internet connection. My modem and router are working fine

(so is my wife’s PC which is 3 ft. away from mine).

Here is my current status for settings in msconfig:

General Tab

I am using Selective Startup and have a check mark in Process SYSTEM.INI

File (so all items are checked under the SYSTEM,INI tab).

I am using Original BOOT.INI

I have enabled a few of the programs that I want to run under the Stratup tab.

WIN.INI Tab

I have all items listed disabled (i.e. not checked)

BOOT.INI Tab

Nothing checked so all disabled

Services Tab

Checkmark for only 3 items, as follows:

DCOM Service Process Launcher

(under Essential heading it says Yes) – (Under Status it says

Running).

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator

(under Essential heading it says Yes) - (under Status it says

Stopped).

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

(under Essential heading it says Yes) – (under Status it says

Running).

If anyone can suggest what to do to get Internet Connection, I would greatly

appreciate it!

I assume its just some setting or something I have to activate.

Thank you all for your help.

Re: Major problem after converting from FAT 32 to NTFS -urgent hel

Re: Major problem after converting from FAT 32 to NTFS -urgent hel

GOOD news all, for me and I am sure for you too because now I won't be

bothering you with the problems I have had over the last 2 days.

All has been fixed. My PC is running like new, Internet connection and all.

Thank you all for all your support and help regarding all my issues. I

really, really appreciate it. You guys are the best!

I will outline my fix, in case you are wondering and to close this subject

with a comment that may serve someone with a similar problem to mine:

What caused the blue screen coming up every 3 minutes or so after each

start-up was "dumprep 0-k", which has now been disabled. I gather this

certainly is not needed because dumpreg is for the message pop-up "program

has encountered an error and must close, to report this error to Microsoft,

click send".

I tried the following steps in order to totally get rid of it, but it still

shows up under startup items (but like I said, now its disabled), but these

steps may work well for others:

Right click My Computer and select Properties, now click the Advanced Tab,

look under Startup and Recovery, click Settings, down towards the bottom

there is a drop down box under Write Debugging Information, click the arrow

and select none and make sure that the word None stays in the box and click

ok, now click the Error Reporting button and choose Disable Error Reporting.

Now click OK and Ok.

Now go to start, search Local Drive, search for *.DMP and delete the files

that it fines, empty recycle bin.

Now run MSCONFIG and see if that program is still in the startup area, if

it's gone great, if not you may need to edit the registry:

Start Run type regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Select

KernelFaultCheck name and hit delete.

So after I disabled “dumprep 0-k” all worked fine on my PC but I did not

have Internet connection. To finally solve that problem I contacted my

Internet provider and he was able to help fix the problem. This was the fix:

Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network

Connections

Now “LAN or High – Speed Internet “ window opens and shows Local Area

Connection.

It should say Connected. If not then right – click and click disable.

Reboot. Get back to same place then right – click and click on Enable. Now

Local Area Connection should say Connected and now you should have Internet

connection.
