Guest SG_Dan Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 I have a series of windows 2003 SP2 servers in a small domain, 3 are real hardware, and 3 on MS virtual server. During and after applying the latest patches to all of these servers, I'm noticing that in all cases I can no longer access my hardware based servers using RDP, or even Remote desktops. The error I receive on RDP is simply that "This computer can't connect to the remote computer." My primary workstation is Vista, but I get the same error running from a fully patched XP workstation as well, both are joined to the same domain. Has anyone else seen this behavior and hopefully found a resolution?
Guest SG_Dan Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 RE: RDP not working after Sept. patching Additionally I find in the Vista system log the following DCOM error which shows a number of remote issues similar to this one: Log Name: System Source: Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCOM Date: 9/18/2008 3:50:37 PM Event ID: 10006 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: Dan-PC.XXXXXX.com Description: DCOM got error "2147746132" from the computer LINUS when attempting to activate the server: {03837521-098B-11D8-9414-505054503030} Event Xml: <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> <System> <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCOM" Guid="{1B562E86-B7AA-4131-BADC-B6F3A001407E}" EventSourceName="DCOM" /> <EventID Qualifiers="49152">10006</EventID> <Version>0</Version> <Level>2</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Opcode>0</Opcode> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2008-09-18T21:50:37.000Z" /> <EventRecordID>74959</EventRecordID> <Correlation /> <Execution ProcessID="0" ThreadID="0" /> <Channel>System</Channel> <Computer>Dan-PC.XXXXXX.com</Computer> <Security /> </System> <EventData> <Data Name="param1">2147746132</Data> <Data Name="param2">LINUS</Data> <Data Name="param3">{03837521-098B-11D8-9414-505054503030}</Data> </EventData> </Event> "SG_Dan" wrote: > I have a series of windows 2003 SP2 servers in a small domain, 3 are real > hardware, and 3 on MS virtual server. Maybe you could find out which patch caused the issue. moncho
Guest SG_Dan Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Re: RDP not working after Sept. patching Thanks moncho, I decided to try your suggestion, and choose my DC to try the uninstall, but first I wanted to review event logs to be sure, and once I logged in locally on the server it reported it was shutting down. I was surprised by this and logged into another server, and the same thing happened. In both cases when I was able to log in, I saw the familiar green shield on the system try telling me my server had restarted after a patch update. I completed this process on all my servers (hardware based only) and they have all come back the exact same way. I then opened RDP sessions on them all to confirm, and they too were successful. I can only conclude that some how, this patch cycle didn’t complete the restart cycle (even though each did reboot after patching) and were all in a “needing restart” state, which of course will inhibit RDP connections. Additionally all the applications were fully responsive, including my Exchange server! This is just weird, but I’ll continue to trouble shoot. So you are saying that the server immediately rebooted once you logged into the console without any interaction by you? That sounds weird. Let us know if you find out anything. moncho > > "moncho" wrote: > >> SG_Dan wrote: >>> I have a series of windows 2003 SP2 servers in a small domain, 3 are real >>> hardware, and 3 on MS virtual server.
