Guest Tony Meloche Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I take care of tech issues with my wife's computer as well as my own, and generally do her updates, defrag, etc. on Fridays. Her computer is a Dell, nine months old, has always operated flawlessly, and is fully updated. I booted her machine this morning, left the room and returned five minutes later to find the hourglass still up (desktop looked normal). I moved the mouse arrow over to a small text file on the desktop and experimentally double-clicked on it - it didn't open, and then I got one short "beep". Absolutely nothing would budge after that - frozen solid. I shut it down, waited two minutes and rebooted - everything right as rain. Interestingly, nothing in Event Viewer or anything else in Administrative Tools showed anything out of the ordinary. A one-time hiccup, or is something going on? Appreciate any responses! But if it was, that complicates this procedure a bit - post back.

Thanks, Mr. Hall. Downloaded, installed and updated the program, then ran it in "thorough" mode. It found absolutely nothing on her computer, and neither did the other two spyware/malware programs I have on her machine, that I update and run weekly. Windows Defender also finds nothing. Just a quirk? Thanks for you advice - I like Malwarebytes Anit-Malware - good program! Guest Bill in Co. Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Re: One beep - then frozen Why don't you consider a System Restore, then, just to be sure?
