whiskey16 Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 I've posted my problem at another forum but help stopped coming. I'll just copy the posts here & hopefully someone here can help? ME: I've just switched to a new ISP but my pc hasn't been able to connect to the internet since the switch. My housemates' computers still connect without any trouble. The router is connected to all the computers with cables, my PC detects the line & can log into my ISP's server, but if I try to connect to any website it says "server not found". My housemates have Ubuntu & Windows 7, while I have Windows XP Home v2002, Sevice Pack 3, on a Pentium Dual-Core, E5200 @ 2.50GHz PC. OTHER: Are any other internet services working. For example, if you are using a mail client such as Outlook Express which is standard with XP are you getting your mail? Normally if all computers are connecting though the same router and none are using a wireless connection the issue is iolated to the one XP computer which may have a bad networking card or it could be as simple as the settings in windows have failed to recognize the new ISP and need to be checked. I don't know what you mean by logging into the ISP's server??? Do you mean that it is showing as connected in the taskbar? ME: No other services (utorrent, dropbox, etc) I've tried works either. A popup in the taskbar notifies me that the line is detected & fine. What I meant by my ISP's server is they gave me an address (10.0.0.2) to connect to to set up the account etc. I can do that successfully, but nothing else internet related works. If I try to open a website in Google Chrome they suggest that my DNS settings or network configuration might be messed up? OTHER: With your machine connected to the router please do the following .... Start ....type in ....cmd ......ENTER [ this is for XP ] At the command prompt type .....ipconfig /all .............space after ipconfig .............hit ENTER ME: Windows IP Configuration Host Name.....................: sandra-36146940 Primary Dns Suffix..........: Node Type:.....................: Unknown IP Routing Enabled.........: Yes WINS Proxy Enabled.......: No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix......: Description............................ .........: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Physical Address............................: 00-24-21-20-A8-1A Dhcp Enabled................................ .: Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled..............: Yes IP Address................................ .......: 10.0.0.4 Subnet Mask................................... .: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway:.............................: 10.0.0.2 DHCP Server................................. ..: 10.0.0.2 Lease Obtained...............................: 13 April 2012 22:19:00 Lease Expires................................ ..: 13 April 2012 23:19:00 OTHER: Try switching the router off - leave for 30 seconds - switch on again. Try connecting again. Check the ipconfig / all again. Is the Lease Obtained and Expires date and time still exactly the same ? ME: Everything is still exactly the same except the Lease Obtained/Expired now says: Lease Obtained........16 April 2012 16:26:51 Lease Expires...........16 April 2012 17:26:51 Any ideas? Quote
BenchZowner Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Which ISP are you using now ? Find the ISP's DNS Server IP addresses and then go to the Local Area Network connection properties, select Internet Protocol ( TCP/IP v4 ) click configure, assign local IP & DNS Servers IP addresses manually ( IP address: 10.0.0.4 subnet 255.255.255.0 def. gateway 10.0.0.2 , dns server XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX dns server alt XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX ) close the window, and try visiting a website again. Whereas XXX the DNS Server IP Addresses of your ISP. Quote
isolatedvirus Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 you can obtain the DNS server information from your roomate's comuters, just ask them to take a look at their information. After you get the DNS servers, you would follow the post above to input the information. Quote
KenB Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Hi, I thought I recognised the text in your post ..................the original thread was at CHF It was me who was helping you. Strange - you took a little over 2 days to reply to my post of the 14th April When I had not replied after 2 days ( I had my reasons - not forum based ) you decided to dump the thread! I would have got back to you at CHF. I have not seen a lease obtained / expires that shows exactly the same time before ??? Start > Run .....type in .....devmgmt.msc .............ENTER Is there a yellow exclamation mark or red X against the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller ? ============== Ref Woodyblade CHF Regarding your settings: 10.0.0.4 is a class A IP Address and should carry with it a Subnet of 255.0.0.0 see here Check your settings as BenchZoner suggested in his post.
