WINDOWS WON'T START, BLUE SCREEN MESSAGE

switched on my pc this morning. a blue screen appeared with the following message.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk fragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and restart your computer.

For a start there are no prompts so I cannot use my keyboard of my mouse so even if I knew what these instructions meant I cannot do anything. I have tried turning my pc off and on again. All I get is the windows starting up and after about 10 seconds the blue screen and the message reappears.

I am a complete novice when it comes to troubleshooting. So please be gentle!!!

Hi and welcome.

You will need the install Cd.

You are using Win Xp?

 

Boot from the Xp install Cd...when prompted press [R]

Choose Windows installation [typically by pressing [1]

When prompted for password.

Press Enter.

Type chkdsk /r

[note space after chkdsk]

 

When fininshed.

Type Exit

And press Enter.

 

If it does not boot from the Hard Drive - repeat the above and type

chkdsk /f

 

The Bios needs to be set to boot [start] from the Cd - it may already be set to do so.

I don't have the install cd. I am using Windows XP

See if can borrow one from a friend or family.

You can then use it to run chkdsk - not to re-install Xp of course, that would be illegal.

It will have to be the same version of Xp that you have installed - Home or Professional.

 

If you fell able to - reseating the Memory and Video card etc would also be my next move.

 

Turn the Pc off - some say leave the plug in to maintain the earth.

But I'd remove the plug from the wall.

 

Once you have opened the case.

Touch the metal case to discharge any static.

 

Remove any dust - do not use a vacumm cleaner, too much static.

Check that all fans are free of dust and will rotate.

 

Remove Ram - Video cards etc and then Reseat in the slots.

But first - clean the copper connections of the Ram - Video cards with a pencil eraser.

If more than one Ram stick - use just one at a time installed in your Pc, as a test.

 

Put the case back on the Pc - and see if it will boot to the desktop.

Worth trying Safe Mode - unlikely to work but..

Tab F8 as the Pc is starting up - will it enter Safe Mode?

Don't know anyone with the install cd. I take it there's no alternative.

Are you able to shut down the computer then restart it and on startup repeatedly tap F8 key then from the options menue choose safe mode with networking?

there was that option beforehand but when i chose that it eventually reverted to the original message that i posted

Hi, From the Microsoft support that error code signifies a file fault. To be correct an NTFS file faulty, I am afraid that a disk is the only way unless someone knows otherwise.

The disk must also be of the same Windows system, for example Windows XP Home, or Professional.

You may be able to buy a new one at a reasonable price if a disk cannot be borrowed.

Thanks. 2 questions. When I start up the Windows it just says Windows xp on the screen, it doesn't say whether it is home or professional or anything else. How would I find out exactly which one it is? If I had to buy one, whrew ould I be able to get one and how much would it cost?

You should have a sticker on the side of the case that looks a bit like this:

[ATTACH=CONFIG]685.vB5-legacyid=1448[/ATTACH]

It will say here if it is Home / Professional / Media .......

 

If you have not had it in for repair and you have not put a different operating system on it then this will be correct.

as mentioned above you will need a windows CD, it is not strictly true that you will need Home or Pro, it is simply checking the NTFS file structure which either CD can do.

As you have access to a computer you could always try downloading a linux live cd, this will allow you to run a operating system direct from the CD (and in RAM), most have a disk checking utility.

have you tried safe mode as mentioned above, try safe mdoe with command prompt then try running the chkdsk command.
