What about safe mode? Just disabling startup items shouldn't affect your

ability to go there.

Which items, specifically?

Have you tried Safe Mode?

Which edition and version, specifically?

No need. All legitimate WinXP installation CDs are altready bootable.

Simply use it.

That can't be done from outside the OS, anyway.

.......please advise

Apologize humbly and profusely to your friend about being "savy," and

then advise him to take the computer to a competent technician, at your

expense, of course.

First try and boot to 'Safe Mode'.

If it still will not boot then try BartPE:

Microsoft has made a WinPE CD and it is absolutely the best:

Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset 5.0 $65 64 MB (30 day trial)

I did try that...........it will not do it. I do not know what version of xp

it is...........it think it is home edition? I have both a laptop with xp

home edition and a laptop with vista home premium sp1.

I would really like to make a boot cd.

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?

What is your computer make and model? How old is it?

Re: I screwed up - xp msconfig

it's likely that your friends

pc needed a tune up and

when you simply tried to

free up some memory

by disabling startups,

it only compounded the

issue your friend already

had.

perhaps, one of the startups

you disabled was actually one

for a malicious software or

incompatible software like

norton av.

my suggestion is to forget

about making a boot cd.

instead, ascertain any

windows setup cd and

boot with it to permit you

to log into the disk system.

via the recovery console

then at the disk prompt run a:

chkdsk

fixboot

bootcfg /rebuild.

then exit and remove

the cd.

the above commands will

break the cycling of booting

that is preventing you from

accessing the safemode or

access normal mode and

then run this:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/article/registry_cleaner_why.htm

the above will tune up the

disk and the registry and

also scan the system.
