mij Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Hi there folks I wonder if you can help me. This problem is on my wife's computer which is a Dell Studio One with Vista Home. As printers are dear to my heart this week (I replaced my CX6600 with a Stylus 235W) I thought I'd have a go at getting the scanner on this one working. It prints fine but the scanner when tried gives a 'Communication error'. It works off mine with vista so why not this one? jim Quote
KenB Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Hi Jim Have you tried uninstalling the re-installing the drivers ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
mij Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 I've tried that several times (read at least three times) and it may work for a day or so then it goes back to printing only. I brought it into this room and went through the installation procedure on this computer (also running Vista) using the disk that came with it and it worked a treat - scanner and printer. This not a Dell BTW. It also works it wireless via the router whilst the all-in-one is in the other room. This does not sit well with SWMBO. I am in the doghouse. cheers jim Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Hi Jim, it sounds like the drivers for the scanner are being corrupted by something if reinstalling them works for a short time, then not. Is there a program on the wife's machine that she uses a lot, and can it be traced to scanner not working after the program has been used? I ask that as it once happened to me with a HP all in one I used to have, being corrupted each time I asked a music notation program to print the score. Nev. KenB Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Hi Jim Instead of the CD try using this driver: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?c=us&s=dhs&cs=19&l=en&DriverId=R236794 Uninstall the old one first. mij Posted May 1, 2012 Author Posted May 1, 2012 I just tried it on SWMBOs computer and the driver didn't ask me to connect a temporary usb cable to the printer as the original disk did. Also it printed but wouldn't scan. As I have another vista machine myself and it worked fine using the old drivers. But having deleted them along with all the dross on my computer yesterday, I attempted to load it in to this one. Funny enough it went through the usb temporary connection and showed the printer in the twain window (it didn't do either of those things in SWMBO's) but it locked up irfanview when I tried to scan something. Back to the drawing board. jim Quote
KenB Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 How did you uninstall the original drivers Jim ? Try using Revo Uninstaller and when prompted select "Advanced" This will remove all trace of the drivers - even from the registry. http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html scroll down for the free version. Then try the new drivers again. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
RandyL Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Jim some of those Studio One's shipped with Vista 64 bit. The only available drivers for Vista are for 32 bit. Is there any chance that one of those Vista machines is 32 bit and the other 64 bit? Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Is there any chance that one of those Vista machines is 32 bit and the other 64 bit? Yes you are correct! The studio one is 64bit mine is 32bit - both running Vista. Also it seems that the network key requires a ten digit number but our's is an 8 digit number. The DellV505 was working fine on mine but I removed the old driver and installed the updated one and now it wont work on either...... ...... computers.......?&%$£%^& jim Quote
RandyL Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I think that's your problem then. There are no 64 bit drivers. As for the computer it was working on go to device manager and look for the option to roll back the drivers. Quote We are all members helping other members. mij Posted May 3, 2012 Author Posted May 3, 2012 I don't need that printer on this computer - even though the driver etc that came with it must have accepted the 8 digit network code for it to work on this computer. SWMBO on the other hand is of the opinion that Dell sold her a pup. It obviously must have had some work around for it to scan and print initially and we are probably way past any roll-back drivers. It looks like a new printer for her. Thanks for all the help and carrying me along on this. Reading back through my posts I had forgotten that her studio one was 64bit. My memory is not firing on all cylinders these days and the damp weather means that any spark jumps to earth.... without any noticeable affect..... jim Quote
mij Posted May 8, 2012 Author Posted May 8, 2012 Well perhaps not all sparks ........... last night when SWMBO printed out with my new printer over the router I had a light bulb moment. Why don't we just swap printers? She has my new one which prints and scans via her 64bit and I know her Dell V505 has worked via the router with this 32bit machine. Problem solved?:D I'll be back, jim Quote
