Guest G. Katts Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 I reformatted the HD and reinstalled XPHome/Sp2 this morning. How do I remove the MS-Messenger thing that refuses to die? I can't even exit it. Unchecking it in msconfig doesn't work. PLEASE... how do I remove it from my PC?

Guest Jason Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Re: Reinstalled XP-Home/SP2... a Q There's a vbs script for this. Also I use control panel - add-remove programs - Windows components. Then I installed the latest version. "G. Katts" <gkatts@anon.com> wrote in message news:eVLsR16GJHA.1156@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... >I reformatted the HD and reinstalled XPHome/Sp2 this morning. I have no idea what this means: "Under Local Computer Policy, navigate to Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Messenger in whatever section you previously determined was appropriate. There will be two settings in the right window pane." The paragraph below does not apply since there is no inf or sysoc under Windows on my XP/Home pc. "To add Messenger to the Add/Remove Programs feature accessible via Control Panel Navigate to C:\Windows\inf (If your Windows directory is different, substitute the proper drive letter) Open sysoc.inf..........." Any other ideas? > > -- > > TaurArian [MVP] 2005-2009 - Update Services > http://taurarian.mvps.org > ====================================== > How to ask a question: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375 > Computer Maintenance: Acronis / Diskeeper / Paragon / Raxco > > > "G. Guest DeeJay Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Re: Reinstalled XP-Home/SP2... a Q XP Home doesn't have gpedit.msc I'd delete (or rename) the executable if I were you. Get into safe mode if necessary. "G. Generally, you don't remove it, you open it, turn off "run in background" and "launch with Windows". then, you disable it in IE and OE and whatever other mail apps you use. Finally, if your antirvirus program scans instant messages, turn that feature off. If you don't do all these things, WM will get launched without your consent. HTH -pk
