Set Program Access & Computer Defaults?

Recommended Posts

I use an e-mail client called Forte Agent for my email. I have it set

as the default e-mail client in IE7. When I go to "Set Program Access

& Computer Defaults", the Option under "Choose a default email

program" is set to "Use my current e-mail program". Forte Agent is

listed as one of the options, but I check it and click OK. Go back to

the control panel and Forte Agent is unchecked and the default is back

to "use my current email program".

What am I doing wrong in getting Forte Agent as my default email

program?

Thanks

Does clicking on a MailTo link or IE7's Mail button open Agent? If not, one

or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party

applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These include

but are not limited to Ad-aware Pro Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,

SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, AVG Anti-Spyware,

Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, NOD32, many other AV

apps, and Zone Alarm (Free, Pro, & Security Suite).

I completely uninstalled Norton Internet Security (cleaned out the

Registry, etc) and config'd my Linksys 4-port Router for Hardware

Security. After that, I installed AVG Free v8 for Antivirus

protection. Nothing else.

So, what mistake have I made :)

So you're current settings are working OK anyway.

Norton applications are notorious for not uninstalling cleanly! Download &

run this removal tool, then reboot:

As far as IE7 is concerned, but I do not get AVG to scan emails. It

has Outlook as the default email and that is the only one that it

scans?

I used the Norton Removal Tool to remove NIS and then went to the

Registry to find anything remaining and removed that.

Maybe it is a limit in AVG that only pays attention to MS Outlook and

not other email clients?

What E-mail client do you want the "File->Send->Page By E-Mail" & "File->Send->Link By E-Mail" to use?

When I go to File/Send/Page By E-Mail - it gives me an error and tells

me to go to MS Outlook and set it as the default email.

In Tools/Programs, I have Forte Agent set as the default email. But,

apparently there is something else I need to do?

Re: Set Program Access & Computer Defaults?

[Please try to avoid inline replies, Charlie. Thanks.]

Email scanning by your anti-virus application is not necessary and it does

not provide any additional security. Even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that

are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans

incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and

email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To

make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep

Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have

the most recent virus definitions.

</QP>

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2002111812533106

The default install of AVG 8.0 includes two (2) email scanning modules, one

for OL and another for other Mail Clients (which may or may not include

Agent). I'd recommend that you uninstall AVG 8.0 via Add/Remove Programs,

reboot, and then reinstall it choosing to do a Custom install and then

opting not to install either of the email scanning modules.

To reinstall AVG 8.0 without the email scanner modules, without WebScanner,

and without the "security toolbar" (AKA Yahoo Toolbar):

1. Download a fresh copy of the installer, saving it to your C: drive (i.e,

C:\avg_free_stf_en_8_169a1359.exe) =>

http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe or

http://www.grisoft.cz/filedir/inst/avg_free_stf_en_8_169a1359.exe

2. Uninstall AVG 8.0 via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,

browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've got AVG 8.0 installed,

properly configured, and updated!

3. Carefully follow these instructions to (re)install AVG 8.0:

http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1338

Tip: Do NOT install the toolbar (if offered) or either of the email

scanners.

4. Configure AVG as you wish via the User Interface | Tools | Advanced

settings

5. Check for and install any available updates.

Re: Set Program Access & Computer Defaults?

Let's start fresh.

I don't use it so I cannot try anything myself, I can only

suggest possibilities for you to try. So let's get started!

You want to set Forte Agent as the default E-mail client,

including

"File->Send->Page By E-Mail" &

Under Options, there is no "General Preferences", but there is a "URL

and MIME Settings" - I checked in there and found Agent as the default

email option

Under this item, Forte Agent is set as the "default"

Re: Set Program Access & Computer Defaults?

This is from the Forte Agent help file that I downloaded:

"/

Configuring Agent as the Default Email and News Program

You can define Agent as the newsgroup and/or email

application to be used by Windows whenever you launch a URL

To configure Agent as the default email and/or news program,

use any of the following:

In Agent, select Options from the Tools menu to bring up the

Options dialog and select the Default Program Settings

panel. Select the options for Email, Usenet News and NZB

files as appropriate.

In Windows 2000, the Add/Remove Programs tool has a Set

Program Access and Defaults section, where you can choose

the default programs for various activities. Agent now

appears on the list of choices for the default email

program. If you choose Agent, it puts itself on the Start

menu and makes itself the mailto: URL handler.

Windows XP has a Set Program Access and Default option on

the Start menu. This runs the Add/Remove Program dialog

with the defaults section pre-selected. Agent appears in

the "Custom" category, which you can see by expanding that

category. Everything else works the same as described above

for Windows 2000.

In Windows Vista, the Default Programs tool has the same

Access and Default section as described above. It also has

a whole new Default Programs section where you can see a

list of programs that are available as defaults for the

Start menu, URLs, and file types. From this list you can

choose which programs should be the defaults for the various

functions.

On the Internet Explorer Internet Options dialog, Programs

panel, you can select which programs are the defaults for

various services. Agent appears as a choice for the Email

and Newsgroups services. If you make Agent the default

email service, it designates itself as the email program

that appears on the Start menu (above), and configures

itself as the handler for mailto: URLs. If you make Agent

the default newsgroups service, it configures itself as the

handler for the NNTP and News URLs.

/"

Please let me know how you solve this problem, sorry that

I could not.

Good luck!
