Removable hard drive won't accept restore image

I have Imega removable hard drive which can't accept system image because it's has not been formatted to NTFS is there a way I can format this without losing whatever is on it.

There is - but it would be sensible to backup anything on the drive that you cannot afford to lose.

 

Connect the external drive and go to Computer and check what the drive letter is ( possibly E: )

 

Start > type in ....cmd ........don't hit ENTER yet

Right click on the cmd.exe that appears at the top left of the new panel. > Run as Administrator

 

At the command prompt type ...

convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs ( where drive letter is substituted for yours - say E )

 

It should look like this:

convert E: /fs:ntfs

 

There is a gap after :

 

You will get a message when the conversion is complete.

 

REMEMBER - backup data first.

Do you mean back up whatever is on the removable drive?in case that all gets deleted,to a dvd

I may not have explained my concern properly in my last reply,my removable hard drive already contains information on it,is this at risk of being deleted? you say I should back up,do you mean back up the c drive ,if so ,to where if not the removable hard drive.Or do you mean back up the c drive to something other than the external drive.Hope this doesn't sound too confusing.

I think he means to back up the data on the removable drive. You can back it up to your main drive C: or to DVD.

 

The point is just in case you might lose something when converting to the NTFS format.

My reply hasn't show yet so in case it got lost,my concern is that the data lost would not be on the removable disk which already contains stuff I don't want to lose.I am concerned that the conversion to NTFS won't cause me to lose whatever is on that removable disc.Anything that might be lost is I would like to think would be on the c drive if anywhere ,is this right? If I backed up to c drive and it got lost how would I recover it?

The drive activity will take place on E: ( or whatever your drive letter is )

 

There is very little chance of any data loss anywhere - and even less on C:

 

When I suggested that you back up the data it was the data on your external drive that I referred to.
