Rebooting a Vista laptop crashes domain controller!

Recommended Posts

I am not sure if this is a Vista problem or a W2K3 problem so please forgive

the cross post.

I have a laptop running Vista SP1 and a domain controller running Server

2003. Everything works just fine until I reboot the laptop at which point

the server freezes completely and needs to be rebooted brutally. There are

no relevant or interesting events in the event logs of either machine and in

fact the laptop goes on functioning normally with no apparent problems

(except of course that it can't access files on the server etc.) after such

an event.

This is new behaviour for about a month now and was not apparent before

then. There have been numerous changes (updates, app installs etc.) on the

laptop but none whatsoever on the server.

What could possibly be causing this?

Hello Qu0ll,

Never heard that rebooting a laptop crashes a server. Check the event log's

of the server for errors.

As I stated in my post, there are no events of any interest in the server's

event logs in relation to this problem.

What about the laptop's event logs?

In conjunction with Hank's question, you can run a packet capture to find

out exactly what type of traffic is eminating from the Vista box that would

crash a specific domain controller (which I've never heard of). Look at the

ports to figure out what the app is, or if it is something else such as

malware, etc.

Do you have more than one DC? If so, do they 'crash' as well?

Any GPOs with software distribution, WSUS, etc?

No idea, but a few things to look at:

1. Does the server have any session open on the laptop? I know its common

the other way round, but I'm wondering whether the server has a reliance on

this laptop. Start a command prompt on the laptop (in administrator mode)

and type "net session" to see what sessions other machines have established

to the the laptop, I wouldn't expect to see any.

2. Does the server crash if you disconnect the laptop? i.e. if you simply

unplug it from the network or disable wireless (as appropriate)? If the

server stays up then I assume a shutdown of the laptop leaves the server

fine?

3. I *think* (but not so sure here) that on Vista you may be able to set

tasks to run when you disconnect a session, its possible (but quite

unlikely) that there is something in task manager which is causing this.

4. Do you run any software on your laptop and server which communicate with

each other? (Other than what comes out of the box using Windows.)

5. Are both the server and laptop running with up to date anti-virus and

patches from microsoft?

6. On the server try updating the driver for the network card. You may need

to go to the manufacturer's website rather than relying on microsoft update.

Hopefully an answer to one of the above might generate some ideas.

Did you skip your morning cup of coffee? (grin)

In the original post the OP stated:

"There are no relevant or interesting events in the event logs of either

machine."

Shame because its otherwise always a good place to start.
