intalled XP but have no sound and basic video.

Troubleshooters dont help. Looked in system info at sounds and display, and there's nothing listed.

Get confused if this is a driver problem or a device problem. eg; is this because I need a driver, which I can download, or do I need to install a physical peice of hardware?

It's probably because you need the drivers which can be found here. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=uk&prodNameId=3357378&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3357377&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093

This is unusual though for HP/Compaq as they are normally on the recovery disks supplied or the ones you make.

Further you state you have XP Home but but the only XP version that this computer shipped with is XP Professional.
