Guest John H Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Why is it that some updates do not allow me to choose whether or not to accept them, but automatically install on restart??? I don't even get the normal system tray notifier so that I can see what it is!

Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Mail, etc.? Microsoft includes a Windows Live Installer which is also an updater program (you'll see it running in the Processes tab of Task Manager). Go into Add/Remove Programs and uninstall that installer/updater. I got rid of it just to keep my host clean and because I don't want anything updating without my permission, and I've heard some users complain about this updater doing updates without their permission or installing something they never got to select. In the least, it is a superfluous updater since visiting Windows Update will or should check if those WL components need updating.
