ohdearme Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Hello, first time post and very grateful to you people who give their time and expertise for nothing. It may not necessarily be mornings only, but so slow it takes sometimes half an hour for my laptop to get going. I have had it for about three years and this problem has been going on for about three months now. It is a Dell (inexpensive one) with Vista Business. Intel 1.73 Ghz. 32 bit OS. Memory 1Gb. I don't know much about all this so please keep it simple. Alan Quote
KenB Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS When you say that it sometimes takes half an hour to get going - is this booting up from being switched off ? Let's run a quick check for malware ....................just in case. Download MBAM from here [click on Products - you want the free version] http://www.malwarebytes.org/ You may get re-directed to a mirror site - this is OK. Install > Update > Run It will produce a log in Notepad. Copy this and post it here please. In the mean time try ( as a work-around) changing the Power Options from Control Panel Click on "Choose What Closing the Lid Does" Select Sleep. When you have finished using the laptop just close the lid. ( I do this with mine ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Starbuck Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 When was the last time you cleaned out your temp files etc? If this has never been done...... 3 years worth of rubbish will slow a system down quite a bit. Clean out your temporary internet files and temp files. Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator). It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin. Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion. Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean. Let us know if this helps. Also please post the report asked for by KenB.... it's best to be safe than sorry. Quote Member of:UNITE
ohdearme Posted May 9, 2012 Author Posted May 9, 2012 I am going to try this out thank you. Alan Quote

ohdearme Posted June 6, 2012 Author Posted June 6, 2012 Soppy of me, I did not read your email properly Ken and failed to copy the notepad result to you. However, I have run the programme today, at last and have also run the TFC programme, Starbuck. Thank you both, I will let you know how it goes. I am wondering if some more ram will help and is it easy to do myself? Regards Alan Quote
Starbuck Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 and failed to copy the notepad result to you. You can still post the report...... MBAM saves all the reports. Start Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Click on the logs tab. The logs are date stamped ... double click on the log that showed any infection items. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/new/mbamlog.png It'll open in notepad. Please copy/paste the report in your next reply. I am wondering if some more ram will help and is it easy to do myself? As you are running Vista and only have 1GB of Ram, i'd say you would benefit from more Ram but will leave this to Ken to explain. Quote Member of:UNITE
KenB Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 As you are running Vista and only have 1GB of Ram, i'd say you would benefit from more Ram Starbuck is correct. 1GB is just about the minimum that Vista will run on. If you have on-board graphics then this will draw on the RAM too. All of this will slow down the system. 32 bit systems will be able to utilise up to 3.5 GB RAM - you can happily put in 4GB ( but any more is wasted ) It is odd for a Vista system to have only 1GB RAM. Was this the original O/S or have you upgraded from XP ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! ohdearme Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Here we go, I hope I have copied it correctly, all this just a little beyond my computer experience. It is below. No, I have not upgraded at all, I took this info from the computer itself, so assume it is correct. It does not just happen in the mornings as I first said, but anytime and I do not usually close the lid. Is that important? What about a format and reload? Despite that being a big deal, it may be worth it. what do you think? Thanks for everything so far. KenB Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Just to confirm: Start > right click on Computer > Properties This will tell you how much RAM you have. What about a format and reload? This is usually used as a last resort. Do you have the original installation CD ( not recovery disks ) ? I will leave Starbuck to advise re. the MBAM log :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Starbuck Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 HKCU\SOFTWARE\opsmr9ibkfl (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. This line is normally associated with Fake AV programs, so maybe the main parts have been removed by your security programs previously. It normally adds entries to the temp folder, so it's a good job you cleaned those with TFC. It may be best to double check this and make sure that everything was removed. We can run a dedicated program to search for any other leftovers: There may be nothing to find, but we wouldn't be doing our job properly if we didn't make sure for you. Download RogueKiller and save it to your desktop. Close all the running processes Double click RogueKiller icon to run the program Vista/Win7 users should right click the icon and select Run as Administrator. When prompted, type 1 (SCAN) and then press Enter A report will open, please copy and paste this report in your next reply. A copy of the RKreport.txt can be found on your desktop. Note: If RogueKiller is blocked, do not hesitate to try running it again. If it still fails to run, right click on the downloaded icon and select 'Rename'.....rename it to winlogon and try again. ohdearme Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 Hello all I tried Rogue killer but mucked up and will try again. Questions of yours that I missed: Yes, I do have original discs and I have not upgraded from XP, this is how i bought the laptop. See you soon, my OE emails now take ages to go, if at all. We soldier on Best wishes Alan Quote
