Hello I recently bought a packard bell desktop 2nd hand a few months ago an recently whilst using it, it just turned of randomly and went dead and when you switch it back on the red power light comes up and you can hear the fan running but nothing comes up or loads on the screen, the screen itself works fine and I have checked this. Also I had the exact same problem with another desktop I had just before this, could this be a due to a overload of plugs I have or isit a coincidence that both went dead in the same placce and set up, does anyone have any ideas on what the problem may be and how I could fix this thanks !!

Hi and welcome to ExTS :)

It is unlikely to be a problem with the house socket itself - unless you are prone to thunderstorms in your area and it could be a spike has caused the problem.

Do you have the system connected through an Anti-Surge Adapter ?

whilst using it, it just turned of randomly

You would know then if there was any lightening about at the time - was there ?

Do you get any beeps when the machine is switched on ?

If you do - ignore the advice below.

I would take a guess that it is either the Power Supply Unit or the motherboard that is at fault.

The fact that there are LEDs lit is no indication that the PSU is functioning properly.

To find out you need to strip the motherboard of all removable hardware and connections.

See here - http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=172

It is not too difficult a job and if you are unsure - take digital photos to rimind you what you have done.

There really is only one way that the hardware and connections can fit together.

( and as it isn't working anyway there is nothing to lose :) )

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
