Guest zzdave Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Is it worth installing this new service pack? Apart from support until April 2009 is seems to cause problems mostly without offering much in return. I have Windows XP PRO fully updated - except for SP3 of course. This is just a straw poll really if you wouldn't mind giving me a quick yes or no If I decide not to go with it, how do you get rid of the update icon on the launch bar?

My vote is yes. Search for subjects "SP3" in this group and a few of the other microsoft.public.windowsxp groups. This has been asked so many times. You'll get a valid argument on both sides. So it will help you little. I did it on 3 pcs and see no massive change, but I'm over the upgrade and its out of my hair. I just did images of my drive to make sure I had a way to totally recover if something happened. I suggest the same to anyone.

I've installed SP3 on all but one XP computer. That one is old, and slow, and has multiple spyware problems. The owner plans on replacing it, shortly, anyway, so I am through with trying to clean it up. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum
Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Re: SP 3 Yes. NB: Many third-party applications (e.g., Norton 2009 apps) are requiring WinXP SP3 and IE7 to be installed. Expect to see more of this soon. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ zzdave wrote: > Is it worth installing this new service pack? Guest zzdave Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 RE: SP 3 OK. I installed SP3 and at the last knockings I got an error message saying that SP3 cannot install. Your system is partially updated and may not work. It then uninstalled everything and fortunately my system DOES work so far. I wont be going for the upgrade again. Thank you for all who rplied.
