Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

We need to look in device management in Windows 7.

Click on Start, and type or copy and paste devmgmt.msc into the search bar.

Click on the devmgmt.msc and the device manager window will open, look down the list for "Sound, video, and game controllers, click the little expansion arrow to the left it should show "Realtek High Definition Audio" are there any red or yellow marks?

OK, try a double click on the "Realtek High Definition Audio" Then on the drivers tab, select update drivers, then select "Search automatically for updated hardware drivers" see if that helps.

Hi, sorry for the delay, work gets in the way during the week.

It must be some odd setting within Windows then as sound works OK when running Ubuntu, I take it Ubuntu was running from the disk and not fully installed at the time?

lets have a look at some settings, firstly go to control panel and for ease of access click View by: top right and select Large Icons, this then spreads all control panel items out so we can see each one.

You should then see Realtek HD Audio Manager as one item, and also just a loudspeaker icon and the word Sound, it is this one we want first as that is the Windows own control.

When the sound window opens, click on the loudspeaker which should highlight it as this screen shot shows.

First try the configure button, in that window try the "test" button, any sound from that?

If nothing there, close that and click the "Properties" button, then on the levels tab at the top, you should hopefully see this window.

Are the settings of the slider controls similar to mine? in my case the pink is not in use.

Also there should be no red circle and bar in any of the speaker icons on that page or window, click on them if there are to remove them as they are the muted symbols.

Let us know if anything is different, and exactly what it is, from those shots.
