regniarg Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 My flatmates have recently set up a new router in our flat and my laptop does not seem to be able to connect. Upon start up the notification appears to say 'can not connect to network'. When I check available networks, mine shows up, after attempting to connect my laptop just seems to forget what it was trying to do and just displays the available networks screen again. There is never a notification window with a problem. Very occasionally it will connect but will again lose the connection after a couple of minutes at best. I have other devices connected to the network (xbox 360 & ipod touch) that seem to work fine so was wondering if anyone could offer some advice? My laptop is running Windows XP. Many thanks. Quote
KenB Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS Are you trying to connect wirelessly ? If so - can you connect using an ethernet cable direct from your machine to the router? Do you know if your machine set up to acquire IP and DNS automatically ? Try this: Start > Run .....type in .....cmd ......ENTER At the prompt type ......ipconfig /release ...........ENTER [ there is a space after ipconfig ] Then type ......ipconfig /renew.....................ENTER Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! regniarg Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the advice, I have tried what you suggested but I get the message of 'no operation can be performed on wireless network connection 2 while it has its media disconnected.' I'm not completely sure what this means. And yes, it is set to detect ip and dns settings automatically. Edited May 10, 2012 by regniarg Quote
KenB Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 From my last post........... Are you trying to connect wirelessly ? If so - can you connect using an ethernet cable direct from your machine to the router? There should be a monitor icon bottom right of screen - right click on this and select "Repair" Start > Run ..........type in ..........devmgmt.msc ...........ENTER Click the + next to Network Adapters What is listed ? Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! regniarg Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 Sorry, yes it is through a wireless connection. I will try connecting through an Ethernet cable. Trying 'repair' just brings up a message saying it can't connect and contact network admin. The two devices under network adapters are: NVIDIA nForce10/100 Mbps Ethernet (with a red cross) Realtek RTL8185 54M Wireless LAN Network Adapter (showing no problems) Quote
KenB Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Hi The NVIDIA ( which you will need to connect with the ethernet cable ) has been disabled or is not functioning properly. Try right clicking on it > enable. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
