Is it safe to delete all default monitor keys?

Recommended Posts

I'm using XP prof sp3 and having display driver problems. Even after a

thorough uninstall and registry clean of the Hitachi display driver I still

have problems when I reinstall.

There are many instances of "default monitor" in control

panel/hardware/system and in my registry. Is it safe for me to delete all

these entries (including the registry) under the circumstances when the OEM

driver for my monitor is uninstalled?

I'm concerned that on rebooting the monitor will not display anything.

perhaps, you should

return your system to

a state of functionality

that it was prior to

installing sp3.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'd rather not revert to SP2

Have you contacted Hitachi about the problem and the possibility of an

updated driver?

Going through the registry deleting keys that you don't understand is

almost guaranteed to create a disaster.

Why don't you start a new thread explaining what your "display driver

problems" are and what you've done. Perhaps your "thorough registry

clean" hasn't totally brought your system to the point where a reinstall

of Windows (repair install or clean install) is needed.

Lem,

Okay i'll explain: I have an ECS K1N SLI motherboard (NForce4 chipset)

with an Inno3D GeForce 8800GT dual head video card. Connected are:

Hitachi CM752ET 19"CRT RGB out to RGB/DVI adaptor

Samsung SyncMaster 172x 17" TFT DVI out

I had to change the motherboard after a failure and after I did so noticed

that the 8800GT fan was constantly running at full speed. As I am not a

gamer this was very annoying so I downloaded the latest certified NVidia

driver. I found that NVidia had changed their Control Panel and it would

not open. I found a simple registry fix which re-enabled their Classic

Control Panel.

Now I was able to change the contrast and brightness using the Classic

control panel but later when I went to revise my settings I found that I

could not open any control panel despite the registry fix still being in

place. I have posted the problem in the NVidia group but have not had a

solution.

I have tried uninstalling all drivers, then used a video card driver

cleaner and then finally removing all traces of NVidia (except NForce4 MB

drivers) and ATI drivers. I then using safe mode reinstalled the original

Inno3D driver from its CD but still the control panel will not open.

Now I have uninstalled all again and at this point noticed four default

monitor entries in device manager and in the registry which led me to make

this post.

I have disconnected the Hitachi and am trying to get the Samsung driver

installed from its CD. The display is presently in VGA mode which is

awkward but until I get the driver installed I cannot change it higher

presumably because I have mistakenly deleted one or more Windows default

monitor profiles. I have used sfc but as I only have an OEM SP1 recovery

disc plus SP3 I don't yet want to try a Windows repair.

I have been working with registry editing for many years and never had a

problem but this time maybe I have been too rash!

regards,

Beemer
