Downloaded Program Files

I have just noticed that I have Java Runtime Environment 1.6 (with no size)

repeated 5 times.

Can I delete the icons? In fact, I have some more from programs I no longer

have like Symantec. Is it safe to delete these?

Thank you

Re: Downloaded Program Files

As you ( or the program ) update the Java Runtime, it doesn't remove

previous versions. Since most Java updates resolve security issues it's

important to remove the earlier flavors. They appear in the Add/Remove

applet as Update #_. You want to uninstall the lower numbered JREs.

The latest is 1.6 Update #7. Remove all others one at a time.

For proper maintenance, you should uninstall any applications you

do not use or need. There is a difference between just removing the

icons ( shortcuts to the application ) and uninstalling the app.

Re: Downloaded Program Files

Thanks

Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing: I am referring to the

folder accessible through IE\Tools\InternetOptions\Settings\ViewObjects

I can, then, delete the icons to my heart's content, right?

Thanks a lot

Re: Downloaded Program Files

Those objects are ActiveX components. Basically little programs that

allow a website to do more than just show text & pictures. The actual

files are stored in \Downloaded Program Files. I don't think we are on

the same page as far as what is safe to remove. I thought you were

referring to Add/Remove programs listing. It's normal to see at least 2

or 3 Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0 in the Downloaded Program Files.
