Guest Jim Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Have somewhat of a problem and need help. After a recent update, I no longer have dialog when I select 'Search' from the 'Start' menu (Start > Search ). The animated character appears, but there is no dialog (options for searches or to change preferences). 'Google is my friend' but have not found anything to tell me how to get the dialog back. Depressing F3 closes or opens the dialog window, but NO dialog appears along with the animated character. How can I get this functionality back? Responses are greatly appreciated. -- Jim "What we know is minuscule to what we don't know..."

If so - what happens if you use the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel applet to remove the latest updates and reboot? Do you regain functionality as you expect?

Sheren: I'll have to step back a bit. I'm making an assumption (we know what happens when we do), since I noticed the behavior after installing twenty-four (24) updates. No, I have not uninstalled any of them to try and determine which one might be the cupric. Yes, I'm guilty. I accuse before having definite proof; only because the install of the updates seems to be the only logical reason why something could have been broken. This is all conjecture on my part! -- Jim "What we know is minuscule to what we don't know..."

Here are a few things to try: No content in the search menu. Click Start, Run and type: regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll (From a post by Ramesh) Transparent drop-down Menu and disappearing menu text - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/transmenu.htm Several dialog boxes are blank: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831430 -- Joe =o)
