Viewing hidden files

Still having problems with my system restore files. Trying to view them

to see when they were created/modified. Windows won't let me as they are

all greyed out and I get an error message when I double click.

Under "Tools"; "Folder Options"; "View"; I have checked "Show Hidden

Files and Folders" and I have unchecked "Hide Protected operating System

Files".

What else can I do to view these files?

Hello Theslaz,

You might want to see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309531

If you're using XP Home, I'm guessing that the section "Using CACLS with

Windows XP Home Edition Using the NTFS File System" in that article is what

you're looking for.

The reason that you cannot see these files is that the permissions do not

allow it. On my systems, only the OS can access these files in any way.

And, the reason that you can view the permissions on such files is that the

permissions are stored in the MFT which is definitely readable by anybody.

Hi Theslaz,

If you still experiencing the problem, you can try to do this

approach. If you

are not sure try asking some friends to do it for you.

1. (Go to Start --> Run, then type Regedit

2. Navigate to the registry folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHO WALL

3. Find a key called CheckedValue.

4. Double Click CheckedValue key and modify it to 1. This is to show

all the hidden files.)
