Deleted files on server from workstation?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've always had the question (but kept forgetting to ask) of where and how

to find a file that gets deleted on a server from a workstation. In an

experiment I used a recovery program to search both machines but was unable

to find the file. I could have missed it of course but what's the consensus

on where the file exists and how to get at it?

Thanks,

Mike

The only place to find it would be on a server backup.

When you delete a file across the network it is deleted. It is not put

into the recycle bin of either the client or the server.

It's likely gone. But of course you have the server backed up, right?

As I said, it was a question I always had and the file I deleted was an

experiment. Yes, I am a good little network admin and

backup my servers.

Besides backups, make sure you're using Volume Shadow Copy services on your

data volume. This is a lifesaver.

Hello Wet,

Files deleted over the network you can recover form a backup, no other way.

It will not be in the recycle bin, either from server or client. Maybe there

is another way with file recovery tools directly on the disk.
