Finding deleted files

Hi,

 

I've always had the question (but kept forgetting to ask) of where and how

to find a file that gets deleted on a server from a workstation, it's in

neither of the machine's recycle bin. As an experiment I used a recovery

program to search both machines but was unable to find the file. I could

have missed it of course but what's the consensus on where the file exists

and how to get at it?
