Hi, all knowing. I recieved a notice that I have new update for Java, from

Sun co. I have not allowed for updates I thought except from microsoft.

Anyway I know enough not to do those updates except right from the company

itself, what I want to know is, how did it get in? How do I find out if I

really need to update that program, and if I have it on my computer. have

widnow xp home edition. sp2, havent installed sp3 yet. Its still hanging out

in my task bar.

They say no stupid questions, just alot of inquisitive idiots. Thanks

Right-click on the Java icon in your Notification Area and choose "Cancel".

Then go to:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

and download Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 in the middle of the

page. Now go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the older Java before you

install the newer one.

After the installation, go to Control Panel and double-click on the Java

icon. You will see an Update tab where you can set preferences.

When you install Java from Sun, it installs SunJavaUpdate.exe and it

runs in the background to poll sun.com and see if a newer version of

Java is available. It's not any kind of spyware and can be disabled by

setting

HKLM\Software\Software\JavaSoft\JavaUpdate\Policy\EnableJavaUpdate to

zero.

count on an informative answer. Sure good to have a place to go instead of

looking through all those" I'm an Idiot books" I have bought that never seem

to have what you need anyway.

I see you said to uninstall the old Java before updating, I have 2 listings

for Java in my add and remove, Java 6 update 2, and Java 6 update 7,

should I remove them both and install a different one, thanks for your help.

Remove Java 6 update 2. Leave Java 6 update 7 since that's the current

version.

Bad advice regarding Java. Java can be a gateway for infection and older

versions of Java have known vulnerabilities. It is important to always have

the latest version of Java.

Re: Java update

One other 'helpful' Java setting is to not cache or hold java content

on the PC. There are some performance issues but it prevents any

Java content from being stored locally on the PC.

Open the Java Applet in Control Panel ( Classic View ), click the

settings button in the "Temporary Files" category. Untic or Uncheck

the option box "Keep Temporary Files on my computer".
