Error at startup: a disk read error occured; press ctr/alt/delete to restart

Upon restart, I checked the 'Event Viewer'.

Event Type: Error

Event Source: Disk

Event Category: None

Event ID: 7

Date: 9/16/2008

Time: 10:03:30 PM

User: N/A

Description: The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block

Product: Windows Operating System

ID: 7

Source: Disk

Version: 5.2

Symbolic Name: IO_ERR_BAD_BLOCK

Message: The device, %1, has a bad block.

Explanation The device has a bad block of memory, which Windows attempted

to read.

The data might be missing or corrupted.

User Action - If this event is logged regularly, replace the hard disk

drive.

Is this an 'error' on 'D'[CD/DVD] drive or 'C'[Hard Drive] ?

I ran chkdsk:

Explanation Chkdsk ran on one of the volumes when the computer restarted.

A log file, bootex.log, was created and stored in the root of the volume.

This file states whether Chkdsk encountered any errors and, if so, whether

they were fixed.

I cannot find the 'bootex.log' file.

I have run:

1. EMSA Disk Check Version 1.0

2. HD Tune

Tests do NOt seem to indicate that the Harddrive is bad.

I have NOT had this error again.

Thank You

Hi Dale,

Not sure what your question is. The log states the file is stored in

the root of the volume, so if Windows is installed on C:, it should be

located in C:\ .

What brand of drive is it? Find out and download the diagnostic tool

from the manufacturers website and run a complete check. I had each of

my three drives fail within a year once, so don't wait too long.

Fortunately I had good backups and was able to clone prior to failure on

two of them.

Was this to repair 'bad block'?

I aslo ran Sea Tools, my HD is MAXTOR. (I dIdn't know Maxtor was a part of

Seagate). Again, it DID NOT indicate that anything was wrong. Things were a

little noisy, sounds better since I ran chkdsk c: /r + Sea Tools.

I had to install .Net Framework to run Sea Tools. Upon check Events, I

noticed:

Event Type: Warning

Description:

Updates to the IIS metabase were aborted because IIS is either not installed

or is disabled on this machine. To configure ASP.NET to run in IIS, please

install or enable IIS and re-register ASP.NET using aspnet_regiis.exe /i.

(Got Page NOT found) on this...

I know this is comparing apples to organes, (do you believe I can't spell

this).

I checked Services. I noticed ASP.net was 'disabled', so I enabled it.

At shutdown, I got an error regarding ASP. (if it's not one thing, it's

another)

I do NOT need this service. Can I disable it again ?

I plan to replace Harddrive.. can't take any chances ! I have 80GB, want to

go to about 160GB. Is there anything I should check..like can my Pentium 4

(2003) handle this larger drive?

Thank You

Re: Error at startup

The "Bad block" message may have been a glitch or your disk might have a

marginal sector. However, if the manufacturer's testing tool gave it a clean

bill of health then I tend to favour the glitch theory.

You should be right with your 160 GB disk, provided that you use SP2 or

higher.
