PEV Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Not a horrible virus or disease I hope. On opening Google or any of my other prefered web pages my normal toolbar with such subjects as file, tools, favourites has turned black so although the buttons are there they are invisible! Don't know if this is a co incidence but I have been charging up my newly purchased sat nav using a uxb cable from my PC to the sat nav and the problem seems to have started then? I had an unwanted tool bar appear in the past probably due to my meddling but this seems to have appeared without my interference! Help please Thanks PEV (Ray) Quote
KenB Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Hi Ray What is the resolution set to ? Right click on the desktop > Properties > Settings Try moving the slider to the right. PEV Posted May 17, 2012 Author Posted May 17, 2012 Hi Ken The slider is already fully to the right and will only hold position fully left or fully right I've tried both but no change. This is really weird. Quote
KenB Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 I found the instructions below: 2. Start 3. All Programs 4. Control Panel 5. Accessibility Options 6. Display 7. Check the Use High Contrast box 8. Apply 9. Uncheck the Use High Contrast box 10. OK 11. Close Control Panel I tried to follow this with Vista and it is not the same. Does this work with XP ? PEV Posted May 17, 2012 Author Posted May 17, 2012 Well I don't really know what has gone on here but it worked Ken but not quite in the way you instructed. As I have no control panel option in my 'all programmes' I went straight to control panel accessibility options display I checked (clicked) high contrast box which made my desktop black and all the icons and text bigger and more contrasting I didnt fancy that at all so unclicked high contrast box With a sinking heart and a swear word or two I went back to desktop and found all my IE icons had the tool bar back to normal and I only had to click on the now visible tools option to see menu bar needed ticking and it's all back! Absolutely fantastic Ken!! :) Thanks to you and this fantastic forum!! Cheers Ray Quote
wellies Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 This is said by some to be a known bug with Internet Explorer. The trouble with this being that fixes need to come from Microsoft. I've also seen the problem described as 'missing toolbars' since you can't see much of what's in them because of the colour. I'm not absolutely sure if this is actually the same bug though. The quick fix is described as above but it can and does revert. If you do a search using the term internet explorer black toolbar bug, there is quite a bit of discussion around. If the 'missing toolbars' problem is the same as 'black toolbars', then there is a Microsoft 'Fixit' available. However, I won't link to it because I wouldn't like to possibly point you in the wrong direction. I'll leave it to the more prominent members to comment. Not much help but some information at least. PEV Posted May 21, 2012 Author Posted May 21, 2012 Wellies see my post in security issues forum under Malware etc. Thanks to you I Googled ' internet explorer black toolbar' and seem to have found the fix! I am going to waite a while before breaking open the Champers but things look hopeful. Many thanks Ray Quote
wellies Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Thanks for the thanks :) ..but the kudos should go to the lady who wrote about the cure and to yourself for finding the article she wrote about it. I'm pleased it worked. I thought it might be cured by a Microsoft 'Fixit' download that I'd come across. These are usually Registry fixes. I didn't want to link to anything like that in case it didn't work, or even made matters worse. The Registry can be such a touchy area. So, it's not well done me. It's well done you. :) Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation.
