all users disapeared

Today I found that all my users have disappeared from active directory, only

built in users remain.

 

I am user windows 2000 SBS server.

 

The only hint as to what happened is in the event log is shows that file

protection had to replace net.exe and net1.exe a few times after that

services needed a users permissions stated to fail.

 

any ideas on what to do.

I have a system state backup but want to here is there are any other option

before I commit to restoring system state
