Guest Andrew S. Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 I recently installed SP3 on my laptop and desktop computers. Since then, I can not plug my iPod into either computer. I receive a "power surge on USB port" error message. Any ideas? Do I need new USB drivers? Should I go back to SP2 (my iPod worked fine with SP2)? Thank you.

Guest Andrew S. Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Re: USB problems with SP3 Both the laptop and the desktop are four years old. I never installed chipset software. When they were running SP2, I did not have any issues with the USB's and my iPod. Xandros - thanks for the link. What is it? Guest R. McCarty Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Re: USB problems with SP3 Any electrical device when first powered on experiences what is called an "Inrush Current". This is a momentary spike that levels out. If your PC's are four years old they both should have USB-2 and USB-1(.1) controllers and hubs. Each controller and it's associated Hub(s) have a bandwidth and power limitation. Hubs are limited to 500 mA's, it's this value you're exceeding. What is important to know is whether the iPods are USB2 or USB1 type devices. Also if they are USB-1 then you may be able to re-allocate the loading of Hubs by moving other USB devices to another USB Hub. This requires determining how USB devices are connected with Device Manager and an alternate view. (Devices by Connection, and expanding the Computer driver to reveal the PCI Bus, then the USB Controller(s). As to why this shows up after applying SP3, it's probably the drivers for the system level USB components. I have been seeing this issue on Dells that had never had the Chipset Software installed, were on SP2 with USB working fine, and with SP3, any USB device plugged in blue screens or errors. Installing the Intel Chipset Software fixed it. Sure. By chance, this is not the error you're seeing, is it? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945436 It's one of a few USB-related patched released after SP3 was finalized. At the top of the page click view and request hotfix. Grab it and see if it helps any. - Thee Chicago Wolf
Guest Andrew S. Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Re: USB problems with SP3 Hey everyone - thanks very much for your suggestions. I appreciate the help! I went by the Apple store today, and they got the same error as I did at home. They swapped out my USB cable, and it works fine now.
