I have a lap top and PC and both are doing the same thing.

I have tried numerous different disks and makes, but cant write to ant of them on either computer.

The pictures are from a digital camera downloaded directly to both laptop or PC. I get 'files ready to write to disk', click the mouse and get 'please load writable disk in drive'...

When I look at the properties of all the disks tried, it states that every disk has no available space, and it is all used. Again this is several disks, tried on 2 machines. Both are running XP.

Hi, with you having tried different disks in both drives, it must be coincidental that both drives seem to have a fault, have you tried a head cleaning disk is the first question? something like this perhaps?

Also try this Microsoft fixit on both drives.
