Compaq laptop using vista home premium. I switch on it does the thing along the bottom but then all I get is a black screen. So I switch off and switich on and up comes Startup Repair. It runs for about half an hour and then the computer starts.

I tried uninstalling Norton and installing again only to find it had wiped all my programmes out so I restored to a few day earlier and all was fine. I came to start it and still back to the Startup Repair procedure. Once on I had to set my Internet settings but other than that it is working. I daren't switch it off now!!!

If you can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help, did you also find the time and date (Bottom right hand corner) had to be reset?

If so it just might be the so called CMos battery on the motherboard requires replacing, if that laptop has one, some don't.

Nev.
