alimac Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 For the last couple of weeks, every time I switch on my computer and try and connect to the internet, I get a message "Internet Explorer cannot display the Webpage" By pressing "Windows Network Diagnostics", I am informed that "there is a problem with one or more network adaptors on this computer" and I am advised to "Reset the network adaptor local area connection. This does work but I would like to know why I have to go through this process every time, after years of problem-free connection. Can anyone help? Quote
Bluesplayer. Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Hi and welcome. Not sure if you have done this already. Start > Run > Type At command prompt. To Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults. Type netsh winsock reset catalog To Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. Type netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log To Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. Type netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reboot your Pc. Should that not work. Also check device manager. Start >Run > Type. devmgmt.msc Click the + sign next to Network Adapters to expand the entry. What is listed there? Quote
alimac Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 Hi and welcome. Not sure if you have done this already.... Thank you very much for replying. No, I haven't tried these suggestions - I'm afraid I don't know enough to know which of your suggestions would apply to my computer. My machine is a Dell Dimension C521, approximately 5 years old, Windows Vista - which phrase should I enter? Sorry to be so clueless :o Quote
Bluesplayer. Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 For Vista - you would click on the Start button. In the Search Box - Type. cmd Run as Adminstrator.[right click] When the command prompt windows opens. Type netsh winsock reset catalog Type netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Type netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reboot your Pc. ---- And for Device Manager. Start > Search Box - Type. devmgmt.msc Click the + sign next to Network Adapters to expand the entry. Let us know what is listed there? http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm#00 Quote

Bluesplayer. Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Did you try the 'netsh winsock reset catalog' etc from Command Prompt? Next to Broadcom440 x 10/100 Integrated Controller - are there any red - yellow exclamation marks? Does this happen from a cold start up - or after hibernation or sleep mode? What is the make and model number of your Pc? Quote

What is the make and model number of your Pc? My machine is a Dell Dimension C521. Microsoft Windows (version 6.0.6001) I did follow your instructions but got the following response: "The requested operation requires elevation. Reseting Echo Request failed. The requested operation requires elevation. Reseting Global, failed. The requested operation requires elevation. Reseting Interface failed. The requested operation requires elevation. There's no user specified settings to be reset" etc etc Re device manager - there are no yellow or red exclamation marks. I can open IE quite normally following sleep or hibernation mode, but always have to repair it after a complete restart - ("This computer has no connectivity") Thank you again for your time. Quote
KenB Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Just butting in here ( as Blues is not on line ) :) The requested operation requires elevation. Start > type in ....cmd .....> right click the cmd.exe that shows top left > Run as administrator This is the elevated command prompt. alimac Posted May 31, 2012 Author Posted May 31, 2012 Sorry guys, you've given me so much help - I must be very slow:confused: When I put in cmd, the command prompt window opens (C:/windows/system32/cmd.exe) but right clicking at that point doesn't appear to give me the option to 'Run as Administrator' - only to mark, paste, select etc. I guess I'm missing something :( Quote
KenB Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Win 7 and Vista will require an elevated command prompt. When you type in cmd do NOT hit enter. You will see a box pop up with cmd.exe highlighted Right click on this. > Click on Run as Administrator Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Clif Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 I just wanted to post my success with this problem. My computer too kept losing its internet connection. Happening for months. Took it back to the store where I purchased it. They replaced the mother board twice, but could not fix. I searched the internet can found many with the same problem, but no definite solutions. Until I found this thread. And now it is FIXED!!! I have to say, I did two things, not sure which ultimately fixed it, but I wanted to share with everyone who reads this thread. I did the following… If anyone knows for sure which ultimately fixed it, I’d like to know. First: 1. Right click computer 2. Manage 3. Device manager - double click 4. Under network adapters 5. Right clicked Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, 6. Selected Properties 7. Advanced 8. Scrolled to Receive Side Scaling and disabled it. And then I did this; 1. For Vista - you would click on the Start button. In the Search Box – Type “Cmd” then Run as Administrator. [right click] 2. When the command prompt windows opens. Type, “netsh winsock reset catalog” Type, “netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log” Type, “netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log” Reboot your Pc. Good Luck! Quote

seglea Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 (edited) Thank you for the very helpful posts here. I found similar suggestions elsewhere on the web, but not so clearly put. However, they didn't solve the problem for me. I tried a couple of other things, including giving my network adapter a static IP, but that didn't work either. In the end I bought, for just under £10 (=$15 US) a new PCIe (network adapter) card. I couldn't replace the one already in the machine, because it was built in to the mother board, so I just disabled it throught the Device Manager after I'd plugged the new one in. I did have some reason to be suspicious of my existing PCIe, because it has always been random as to whether it registered on the network switch as running at 1Gb (which it is supposed to) or at 100Mb. Anyway, replacing it seems to have solved the problem completely. I could have used a USB to RJ45 adapter (costs 3 times as much, though) if I'd not been happy going inside the machine - but I'm an old guy and we used to have to do that all the time, so it doesn't bother me. Having read posts all over the web, and the feedback on them, my view is that if you have this problem, then if it is due to software or the state the network has got itself into, the suggestions above are likely to fix it, and nothing else is likely to. If the suggestions given here don't work, it may be a hardware problem - and the hardware fix is cheap and easy. Edited September 7, 2013 by seglea Quote
