scotlass Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 hi guys, i have never built a computer before but love the idea of creating a system suited for my needs, my problem so far is identifying what parts i need there are so many different types of motherboards, cpus etc that i have no idea where to start. i have a budget of about £500-600 and would idealy like to use the pc for some gamming but not hard core, as well as a storage system for movies and music etc. i have been looking at intel core i5 2550 and asus motherboards such as the p8z68, are these suitable for my needs? any help or advice would me much appreciated, thanks :) Quote

KenB Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Hi again just to add a bit of confusion :) http://www.ebuyer.com/search?q=motherboards&x=0&y=0 http://www.dabs.com/ for some gamming but not hard core Your choice of Video Card will do nothing for your gaming (I am not a gamer by the way) I think you will find some games jerky. CPU Basically the choice is yours. There is a constant debate re AMD and Intel but the thing that will decide if games run better is the Video Card. If you can afford it ............ AMD Radeon 6870 ( about £180 ) Needs 500Watt min PSU AMD Radeon 7750 ( about £70 ) Needs 400 Watts min PSU These would be be a better bet. scotlass Posted May 21, 2012 Author Posted May 21, 2012 thanks for that, i could probably get the £70 one, i had no idea what to look for in a video card, would that card work in a intel build or would i need to go for amd cpu aswell? Quote
KenB Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 The card is not linked to Intel or AMD processors. As long as the motherboard has a PCIe x 16 slot it will function. The card specs: http://www.amd.com/uk/products/desktop/graphics/7000/7750/Pages/radeon-7750.aspx#2 As I have already stated - I am not a gamer. The 7750 is a far better choice that what you had originally. High end games would probably run better on the other card - but you get what you pay for and £70 for a gaming Video Card is really at the bottom end.
