Guest Buttnuts Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 I am not sure if this is the right group and I appoligize for the cross post but I am really in need of some help. I stepped into a site that needs to upgrade the hardware and software of their current Domain. The hardware is ancient (9+ years old) and nearly completely out of resources. Here is the role of the server OMG It is the PDC, It has Exchange on it (with only a few accounts but it is the 'front end' server for our other main Exchange server - which has all of our accounts on it) It also has ISA 2004 which controls all access to our network - that access includes access to our Web Server with 6 web sites (all public 3 of them with web services applications that access our SQL dbase located on another separate Server. ) VPN and FTP services We will be adding a hardware solution for the firewall/access very soon - Cisco 5520. So I can get away with worrying about that later. But after going through all my books and searching groups and online I am having trouble finding the 'true/best' path procedure to take. I figured I would get the new server in (Win2k3 Server Ent.) 1. Join the new machine to the existing domain as a member server adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep dc promo etc. make sure DNS is installed and working make the new machine a global catalog server install DHCP, Terminal Services, RRAS, Certificate services etc. But what about Exchange and ISA. Is it possible to install Exhange and ISA and 'restore' the 'old' stores (Exhange) and import the old ISA config back up - Temporarily of course; the new fire wall should be available in a few months. Should I install Exchange 2003 and ISA 2006? And if I do what issues with there be with the existing Exhange 2000 mail server (main mail stores) and with ISA access - vpn, terminal services, and most importantly web services and ftp access.? I hope some one could steer me in the right direction. Please post here. and thanks for the help
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Re: DC upgrade from Win2000 to Win2003 (with Exchange and ISA) Hello Buttnuts, Just to get you correct, the server is Domain controller, Exchange server, RRAS and ISA server? Did i miss something? Is this 2000 SBS? For the roles you should think about a different hardware scenario. Exchange on separate member server, also ISA and RRAS. Domain controllers should not run RRAS because then you have multiple ip addresses on it, can make a lot of problems. Exchange should not run on DC's of performance reasons and ISA server has to be a separate machine so that it will really is the wall between outside and inside network.
