Exchange issues - SMTP. Possibly MTA Stacks?!!

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi there, I'd be really grateful if someone could have a quick read of

my problem!

My Exchange server is causing problems. 2-3 times a day, all outgoing

emails are bouncing with SMTP errors - Example:

There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email

server. Please contact your system administrator.

<exchange.xxxx.local #5.5.0 smtp;550

<emailaddress@gmail.com>... Relaying denied>

I am on a BT Business ADSL line and using a standard BT SMTP server

which has always worked fine. I've checked at BT and it's working

fine too.

Rebooting my Exchange server resolves the problem but only for a few

hours.

Incidentally when my server restarts I always have to manually start

the "information store" service, and now I also have to start the "MTA

Stacks" service.

Running Exchange 2003 on Windows Server 2003. 700MB remaining on

system drive and 30GB left on Exchange drive.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Hi,

I've seen this problem and it was because the Exchange server was the only

Global Catalog server in the site. Maybe it is your case here. If it is, try

to add this role to another DC.

Re: Exchange issues - SMTP. Possibly MTA Stacks?!!

There all sorts of things in the event viewer, and not sure which are

important! There seem to be several referring to MAD.EXE around the

time of the issue. Like this one:

Process MAD.EXE (PID=2296). All Global Catalog Servers in use are not

responding:

and

Permanent failure reported by policy group provider for 'CN=System

Policies,CN=Microsoft

Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=local':'MAD.EXE',

error=80040103. Taking provider offline.

Any ideas?

Hello Paul,

Please post the complete event, click the 2 paper button in the right corner

and paste it into the posting. In Exchange system manager check in the recipient

update service to which domain controller it is pointing and make sure the

DC is Global catalog server

Check this one also:

That won't work, because if the Exchange Server is a DC/GC it will only use

itself.

If the Exchange server IS a GC as suggested, I would look at the overall

performance of the machine, if not, I would ensure you have the correct

Exchange to GC ratio of 4:1 (or 8:1 if using 64bit hardware and the DIT is

in ram).

Hi,

Not true. I can assure you that you need another GC in the site even though

the Exchange Server uses itself. If not, sometimes Exchange Services will

try to start before AD is started and that will result in the problem the OP

is refering to. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875427 , especially the

section "Exchange Server computer placement".

Hello ThePro,

From what point there do you read that you have the need for a second GC

in the site? We have had in 2 domains only one DC with exchange installed

and works without any problems over years.

Re: Exchange issues - SMTP. Possibly MTA Stacks?!!

Hi,

This line:

"The installation of Exchange on a domain controller may affect the

performance of that domain controller. In some scenarios, this performance

effect prevents the Exchange-related services from starting successfully

when you start the computer. In these scenarios, you must manually start the

Exchange-related services."

The "In some scenarios" phrasing is less than precise but I encountered

myself at least two different DCs with Exchange 2003 that needed a second GC

at the site for the Exchange IS service to start automatically at boot time.

This article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829361 is another case when

more than one GC can be helpful.

Hello ThePro,

But then i will still refer to the configured DC/GC in ESM or not? So another

GC in the domain will not be used from the exchange server, or?

In ESM you can keep the Exchange server itself. The other GC will only be

used during startup/shutdown.
