Please try the IE7 group.

The recommended newsgroup is microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

In a proper newsreader:

http://news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

If you must use a web interface:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

Post the complete error message you're getting about the IE version. Also

tell us what third-party firewall you're using.

Is this a warning message or just a banner ad?
