Guest BrandonAj_18 Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 I am not sure what happened in June 2008 to our computer but it stopped having most of the windows functions. We do not have paint, calculator, volume control, and many other things. To top it off whenever we put a cd rom in the drive it will not run it on the computer because it doesnt recognize the drive. There is only a c drive now and it is driving me nuts here. A friend tried system restore multiple times and we located the date the problem occured but the system will not restore we get a message stating that it cannot be restored to the earlier date. Any ideas? Yes I have the Cd Rom that came with the computer however I cannot restore from Cd Rom if the computer will not recognize it.

You need to determine if it's simply that Windows does not recognize the cd ROM or if it's just plain defective. Check the bios and see if it's recognized... if so set the boot order to boot fist from cd rom. now reboot and see if you can boot from the cdrom... if so, you can perform a repair installation NOTE: Be sure to backup all your data before you do anything else

Sounds like it's slowly shutting you down because Genuine Advantage says it's an invalid system. Galen

But, listen, have you downloaded the SP3 pkg lately? When I did that, the same thing that you mention happened to me. I couldn't even go in the internet, and my Device Manager was all empty. I went to Add/Remove in Control Panel, and removed the SP3 pkg. Then, I went to Start, Search, wrote down SP3 and removed all the remaining files too. Then I called Gateway (my computer is a Gateway). We tried few things, and this is what worked for me: I went to Start, Run, Msconfig, Services. In services there are choices "Disable all" or "Enable ALL". Mine were all disabled, I clicked "Enable All" and that fixed my problem. I hope this can help you.
