Re: reinstalling windows xp over windows vista

During the installation process, a choice of existing volumes will be

shown. There will be sub-options to delete existing partitions. You

just select them one at a time and enter the proper action. Once all

volumes are removed then you create a new volume for XP. ( Or

leave some unallocated space to create additional volumes after the

XP installation is complete. )

Note beside other Helpers Advice you need to check with your

Machine/PC/Laptop that they have XP drivers for this installation.

Some users lately had trouble in a clean install on anewer machines that

didn't support XP drivers.

Uou can always Put the CD In while on the desktop and check Hardware

compatibilty.

Can you let us know your machine maker and model!

RE: reinstalling windows xp over windows vista

I have a Gateway model GT5220. It came with the factory cdrom to reinstall

windows xp. The vista upgrade cdrom came later via mail. I think the problem

all began when I installed the vista. I did nothing but install the vista

over xp. When I tried to reinstall xp, the updates stuck on 7 of 67. so I

reinstalled vista. I just want my xp back.

Is this "factory cdrom" an installation CD or a restore/recovery CD?

What Service Pack level is your version of XP?

You best option is to wipe out the HDD clean and reinstall XP.

Assuming that you have an installation CD (not an OEM restoration CD).

just boot from the CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to

accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation

(delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then

create a new one).

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the

opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the

installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot

devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

If you had an OEM installation (pre-installed at the factory) on

the laptop, simply follow the manufacturer's recovery instructions in

the manuals that came with the computer (or consult the manufacturers'

web site). The OEM is contractually obligated to have provided you with

some means of restoring the computer to its original, ex-factory state.
