Network OK but internet not working on PC

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a PC where the internet stopped working - Outlook, Firefox, and IE cannot see the internet.

The internet is via an ADSL modem/router. This PC and two other PCs connect to this modem via

network cables forming a workgroup network.

The problem PC can see access the files of the other PCs on the network (so it's not a network

problem) and the other Pcs can get the internet. If I move the network cable from the problem PC to

my laptop. I can get the internet on my laptop.

On the problem PC, temporarily turning Windows Firewall off didn't help.

Thie propblem PC ran out of hard disk space at around the time the problem occurred. I freed up

500Mbytes of space, then everything worked fine except for the internet.

According to the event log, it ran out of room because a Microsoft update (probably SP3) tried to

install, but the disk space was too low.

I checked the services running, but couldn't see anything obviously wrong.

Any suggestions?

A good starting point would be to take the following steps on your problem

PC and also on one of the other PCs:

- Click Start / Run / cmd {OK}

- Type these commands:

ipconfig /all > c:\test.txt{Enter}

ping http://www.google.com >> c:\test.txt{Enter}

ping 209.85.135.104 >> c:\test.txt{Enter}

notepad c:\test.txt {Enter}

- Paste the respective texts into your reply. Mark clearly which text comes

from which machine.

You probably have a damaged winsock. Read the causes in the "XP TCP/IP

Repair" download page and download the application to fix your Internet

connection. Once you have the application installed; 1st Reset the TCP/IP

and restart the computer, and 2nd Repair the Winsock and restart again.

Thanks Pegasus, I'm not at the PCs at the moment, but will be later (around 7 hours time) and will

try what you say and paste the results.

Best wishes,

Jon

Re: Network OK but internet not working on PC

I think I can cope with your name change . . .

The settings you posted are OK. They confirm that you have a live Internet

connection. They also tell us that name resolution does not work on the

problem PC. In other words, it fails to translate http://www.google.com into a

valid IP address. The translation is performed by your router at

192.168.1.254, which probably delegates it to the name server at your ISP.

Here are a couple of things you could try:

- Have a look at the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. The only

entry it really needs is this line (although it can have many others):

127.0.0.1 localhost

If it has additional lines, create a backup copy of the file, then delete

all lines except the one above and try again.

- Check out your router and determine the DNS address it received from your

ISP, then plug this value directly into the setup screen of your NIC. The

command "ipconfig /all" should then generate this output:

Ethernet Controller (3C905C-TX Compatible)

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-B0-D0-39-B3-59

Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes

Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.93

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254

DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd

where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the address of your ISP's DNS.

Don't forget to check out Ronaldo's Winsock suggestion.

Re: Network OK but internet not working on PC

Thanks for your help on this.

No luck with the hosts file.

I decided to re-install Windows (+ other applications) on the PC, since it was getting a bit

sluggish (has been for a while). It also gave me the chance to install a bigger hard drive (running

out of space probably caused the problem in the first place, and I only had around 500MBytes of free

space after pruning things). Now the internet works again, and the PC is as fast as new.

Best wishes,

Jon
