Hello everybody,

I am new to the website, I've been around the website searching for answers to my problem before opening a thread that's been done a thousand times over, and I can either (a) not find a solution that works or (b) cannot seem to penetrate the solidity of the language barrier. Being as I am no computer savant.

In a nut shell:

My laptop shut off, when powered on froze at the windows starting screen

-tried every which option on bios screen, boot sequence screen- everything would just freeze up

Downloaded windows 7 put it on a disc ran it, froze up

Downloaded wndws 7 to a flash drive, booted it, nothing- froze up

Finally got a screen to pop up for reinstall, progress bar ran for a while seemed good, then hung up and froze after about 45 minutes... Had to power off again

Opened bottom of laptop to see what kind of hdd I had, replaced cover, powered on, now it's stuck at the black screen with the Msi logo, and the f11,f3, and delete options, which none of them work. If I wait a few minutes it's back to the "bootmgr is missing ctl+alt+del to rstrt"

In a nutshell lol. Sorry if I lack a tech savvy vocabulary, I'm just trying to get my laptop to work lol, any help would be seriously, deeply appreciated. Thank you,if you even took the time to read this

Hi and welcome to both of you to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

Firstly Coronaadvances, can you please start a thread of your own as your problem is quite likely to be entirely different to this one, thanks.

I am afraid your problem sounds a lot too much like a failed hard drive, but I must also ask you where did you download the copy of Windows 7 from please?

Thanks for responding, I had actually ordered the disc from msi for $25 and they burned me a copy with 2 discs. I also had tried a copy that a friend of mine had and I used the serial number on the bottom of my laptop

For now stick to the copy MSI sent, though I feel that is likely to only be a recovery disk and may not carry a full copy of Windows 7. Though I may be wrong about that as they sent two disks.

However, now I have had chance to read this again and your first post, I am a little worried about the BIOS itself.

You say you managed to get into the laptop OK, did you notice if there is one of the coin cells fitted to the laptop motherboard, you may need to look on the component side of the motherboard for it if there is one.

If there is, and I assume power is off and battery removed at this point, remove that coin cell and leave it out for five minutes, then replace, making sure it goes back in the same way up that it came out. That should at least reset the BIOS to default settings and hopefully be able to at least get to the BIOS settings page. Also check that the first time you looked didn't disconnect anything.

It may still not boot if my assumption is correct about the hard drive. If so, the way to be sure one way or the other is to remove the hard drive and then connect it to a 2-1/2 inch SATA to USB adapter to then connect to another but working computer.

You can at least then retrieve any important data from the drive if it will work at all. If it won't and the other computer doesn't recognise a drive is connected, that will confirm it is dead.

Nev my friend, thank you very much. Idk how to give points or kudos and I don't have the patience due to the fact that I've been drinking a bit lol, but the drive was destroyed. I would live to know how this happened after only a year of mild use. But I just opted to buy a new drive, found one (a 500gb instead of my 320) for 60$ and I reformatted and all is well. Thank you sir. Thank you 10x over.
