Why are my OneNote files being saved as PDFS on OneDrive which cannot be opened by Adobe Reader?

When cleaning up my external hard drive I noticed many many OneNote files that are being saved as PDFs. Adobe Reader cannot open them and gives an error saying "cannot open file type." So I tried to change the file type associated with OneNote only to discover there are two OneNote apps: OneNote and One Note for Windows 10. Can anyone suggest what to do to make Windows save the files so they can be opened? Thank you
