With Windows XP Pro. Under Word.

I have searched under Tools and Options and cannot find the word counter. I

have seen it before but it seems to have done a disappearing act.

Could you give me a suggestion?

Thanking you in advance.

Help, Readability. That should point the way.

Re: Word counter

Open Word then Click Tools on the main toolbar. From the drop down menu,

Click Customize. When the customize window opens, click the Commands tab.

Look down the list of commands and click on the Tools option (left hand

pane). In the right hand pane scroll down until you come to the Word Count

option. You can now drag this to the main toolbar.

Here's a suggestion: Ask in a group with WORD in it's title. Here's

another suggestion: Notice this group lacks that word.

Ask elsewhere

Hello. I have done all that and reached: tools calculate. When I dragged to

the toolbar, il went gray and irrestponsive. Can't figure out

where the problem is. Regarding the suggestion from other participants to

find a related "Word" forum, I have not found one yet among the discussion

groups. And it is late. If you can help more, Mr. Barnett, I would be very

grateful. Thanks.

Re: Word counter

I'm not sure why it should go grey and unresponsive unless you are trying to

'drop' it onto another toolbar icon. You have to drop it between other

toolbar icons, for example say the toolbar menu has File followed by Edit

you need to drop the Word counter Icon between the two - File|Edit (drop

word counter where the | is in my example) thus you would have File Word

Count Edit, if you see what I mean.

As you are using Microsoft Outlook Express as your newsreader, click on the

Newsgroup button on the toolbar and look down the list of available

newsgroups for the following:

microsoft.public.word.newuser

There are more, of course, but this will probably be he best to go for to

start with.

Incidentally what version of Word are you using? I'm using Office 2007 and

the toolbar layout has changed considerably compared to previous version and

Word Count is already a toolbar option with Word 2007.

If I have copy of the version you are using I can always install it and see

if I experience the same problem.

Oh thank you so much, John. My Word is 2003, French, not that would make a

difference. I am only starting to use it regularly and, of course, I have

surprises. You are very kind. I'll check my OE thing.

I have a copy of Office 2003 which includes Word so I'll install I and see

if I can replicate your problem. As you say the language won't make any

difference, the icons are still the same:-)

Basilique,

I've installed Office 2003 and dragged the word count onto the Word main

toolbar without experiencing any problems, so I'm not sure what is causing

your problem. When you dragged the word count icon to the toolbar did the

drag box have a plus sign (+) visible as you dragged?

This must be the quirkiest yet, I do not have an icon to drag no matter

where I look. I think what talked about was a calculator tool, numbers. It

does not seem real! I know I saw it before! And used it too. I may have to

wait until my technician has to pay me a visit...

You seem to have picked the wrong thing to add to the tool bar. There

is an entry specifically named "Word Count ..." (just like that,

although without the quotes). There's no icon next to it, so just click

on the name and drag it. Unfortunately (at least in my Word 2003) the

list of commands is not alphabetized, so finding the right one means you

have to look more carefully.

Re: Word counter

Perhaps Icon is somewhat misleading initially. When you clicked on

Tools>Customize>Command tab>Tools you should see 'Word Count' in the

available list (as Lem say's the list isn't in alphabetical order, so you

need to look carefully) When you have found 'Word Count' click on it with

your mouse then, holding the mouse button down, drag the 'Word Count' words

up to the main toolbar and then drop it in-between one of the other toolbar

options (as I stated before File|Edit| etc.) You should now have a Word

Count icon on the main word toolbar.

Re: Word counter

All right. I went back. Word counter, with or without icon is just not

there! I would have dragged its rear end on the toolbar pronto if it had

been there.

I really do not understand this at all.

However, I wish to thank you for your help and patience. It reconciled me

with the human race.

We'll talk again I am sure of that.

Sweet dreams.
