Guest core9 Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Hello, I just had to reinstall windows xp home service pack 1 on my moms aging computer. The recovery cd is just a service pack 1. Well now I cannot install many antivirus software because it doesn't support this operating system. What I need is to find an update to service pack 2. My moms pc only has 512 mb memory. Thanks C

If you have the original CD and if the CD drive can burn CDs, I recommend you go grab NLite 1.4.9.1, XP SP2 (full package), and XP SP3 (full package) and use NLite to create a slipstreamed SP3 CD and re-install from scratch. It will then be patched to a full level and your AV programs should work fine afterwards. Give it a shot. - Thee Chicago Wolf

Run the Microsoft update and you will get the latest service pack, which is SP3, not SP2. > My moms pc only has 512 > mb memory. "Only" is not an appropriate word here. Except for those people running particularly memory-hungry programs (such as photo editing or video editing), 512MB is sufficient for people running Windows XP. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup
Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Re: windows xp home edition service pack 1 HOW TO get WinXP SP1 fully patched: 1. Download & save the installer for WinXP SP3 to your desktop: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4 [Yes, you can skip WinXP SP2 altogether.] 2. Read & heed: http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/windows-xp-sp3-read-all-prerequisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx 3. Logged in as Administrator, if necessary, double-click on the saved file to install WinXP SP3. Follow all prompts; be patient, and reboot twice when the install completes. 4. Do Resolution Method 2 here (trust me): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 5. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Install any required software then click on CONTINUE | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any critical security updates offered. Again, follow all prompts. [i do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update.] 6. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled; cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525 Addtional References: Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09.
