Hi, This may be an odd thing to ask.

Is there a fairly straight forward way to disable / eliminate a lot of the rubbish that you have to endure on search engine pages? e.g. adverts? Or is it way too technical?

Thanks very much

Internet explorer 8

This would have been a lot easier if it wasn't IE. :(

M$ don't let you play around with IE very much, where as there's a lot of extras you can add-on to Firefox that will help to get rid of this advertising rubbish.

Firefox has much more functionality because of these addons.

eg:

Adblock Plus

Simple Adblock 1.0.5

to name just 2.

If you really want to keep using IE, there is a couple of things you could try:

Go to Tools >> Internet Options, Click Avanced tab and then check Use Software Rendering Instead Of GPU Rendering*

Click Apply and then OK.

That should help.

You could also try:

although i've never used it myself.

Hi, this rang a bell Starbuck, and lincolns, which reminded me that some time ago I found and downloaded a Simple Adblock which was specific to Internet explorer. So having searched it out you can download it from here=

I also found there seems to be no connection to the folks who make the one for Firefox that you linked to Starbuck, though it carries the same name.

I found it to be quite good, though I don't use internet explorer much these days as I am also a Firefox addict. :D (With Adblock Plus)

Simple Adblock does work very well in Internet Explorer. It not only blocks ads but also closes up the gaps up where the ads were situated. Just worth mentioning is that although earlier versions of the program were free with no restrictions, later version are limited to blocking 200 advertisements per day (after the 30 day trial expires). So, if using IE all the time, it would be necessary to buy the program ($29-95 for a lifetime licence that includes future updates).

Also worth looking at are the tracking protection lists (TPLs) that are available free for Internet Explorer:

Maybe not as good as Simple Adblock because I think they don't re-arrange spaces left by the blocked ads. The price is better though.

Thanks for the replies, I can't find the "Use software rendering" instead of "GPU rendering" under the advanced tab in Explorer 8!

Also, can you use Firefox alongside IE8 and does Firefox not contain adverts?

It should be right at the top:

Yes, no problem.

I have IE, Firefox and Opera installed.

On the odd occasion i even have 2 different browsers open at the same time.

does Firefox not contain adverts?

It's the actual websites that contain the adverts, so they'll normally show in all browsers.

But they are a lot easier to block in Firefox.

Hi,

Firefox itself is just a web browser in the same way that Internet Explorer is a web browser, there are also other browsers, each of course have their plus points and some negative points too.

However, Firefox does lend itself to many more add ons and plugins that help you the user get a better experience.

Adblock Plus which is aimed mainly at Firefox and will not work at all with Internet Explorer, is an add on that I and many others have found to be one of the best at blocking all adverts and other unwanted trash.

What is more, it is free to download and use at no cost to you, or anyone else for that matter.

Edit to add, you posted while I was still writing Starbuck, I will have to get those high speed running shoes perhaps, ha ha.

Hi,

Your picture of the internet options advanced tab shows "Accelerated graphics" at the top of the menu. My tab starts at "Accessibility" only, missing the top line. Why? I'm using Windows XP home edition not Professional, could that make a difference?

I've just checked with my XP home system and you are correct.

That setting isn't there. ( i never realised that before)

Seems the only option then is to either follow the guide by wellies

or to use Firefox and and install AdBlock Plus as an addon.

No problem, that's what we are all here for.

Personally... i think once you switch to Firefox you won't go back to IE.

Firefox will do exactly what you want it to and look like you want it to.

Search through all the addons available and you'll see what i mean.
