Guest simonc Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 I raised this before but unfortunately didn't get any replies which helped solve the problem. I now have some more information. The problem is that every time I try to remove a USB portable hard drive and use the Safely Remove Hardware icon I get a message that the device Generic Volume cannot be stopped. This although I have no applications open. I've now discovered that if I have the USB device already plugged in when I boot the computer it gets locked as described above. However, if I plug in the drive after booting up and logging on then I can eject it at will with no problems. What might be the application which would be locking the disk drive only when it is there as the computer is switched on? Grateful for any suggestions.

This would help to tell you what application is blocking access to disconnect the drive(s). As a added note: If you have InCD, it seems to like to access all the drives regardless if it is not RW drive.

With me that usually means that I have the drive open in Windows Explorer. -- Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM Do not reply with email

If you have System Restore monitoring that drive, that can contribute to this problem. And be sure that it's not open in Explorer, it's not being scanned for malware, etc. HTH -pk
Guest simonc Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Re: Unable to stop USB hard drive Thank you for this. What a wonderful programme Unlocker is. The application blocking the drive was called crypserv.exe. What is that and what does it do? Whatever it is Unlocker successfully unlocked it and allowed me to stop the drive.

A quick search seems to indicate that this might be a security package for another application: http://searchtasks.answersthatwork.com/tasklist.php?File=CrypServ
