Hi

I had a customer come into the shop the other day to ask me how he could use his dos programs on win xp?

He did say that he heard from some one that there is a software that he can buy that will work but as i am not a software person i was not sure, i am more into the hard tech stuff hands on.

So i thought that you guys might know of something that would help my customer.

Hi, the problem is the fact they are entirely different operating systems and work in different ways.

XP itself has some ability to run earlier programs, but I suspect not DOS based ones.

I personally have not heard of any software that could help, though there could well be some, I suggest a careful wording of the question in Google may be the best way forward unless someone else sees this and knows of something.

Hi DM

You can open a DOS emulation window in XP by doing the following:

1) Click "Start" and then "Run", you will find that the XP run box will appear.

2) Type "cmd" in the "Open" area bar and press "Enter/Return", a DOS emulation box will now appear.

You will now be able to run (some) DOS applications using this DOS box.

Words of warning: I have never used this DOS box to run a full blown DOS programme like Word Perfect 5.1, just some one-off commands like DIR, and I don't believe that Microsoft intended the XP DOS box to run such big applications. However, you may be able to give it a try and see what happens.

Finally, I must emphasise that the XP DOS box is not true DOS but a DOS emulator box. Anyway, to close this DOS box just type "Exit" at the prompt and press "Enter/Return".

Hope this helps.
